Moving Overseas to or From Spain
Moving International From or to Spain
When moving overseas, the first choice you will need to make is how you plan to ship your personal belongings. Air shipments are possible but are most often used to import valuables like rare cars or irreplaceable antiques.
Most people choose to use overseas shipping. Depending on how much you are bringing with you, you may decide to go with a half container (20 ft of cargo space) or a full container (40 ft of cargo space). The cost of shipping a container to Spain will vary based on the country you are departing from. From New York, a full container would cost between $6,900-$9,300. From Tokyo, the cost would be ¥964,100 - ¥1,316,000.

Moving household goods to Spain
Your shipment to Spain cannot depart from your home country until all of your paperwork is submitted and in order, and Spanish customs officials have approved your shipment. You must also be in Spain when your items for personal use arrive.
In order to qualify for tax and duty-free imports, your items must have been owned by you for at least six months prior to your move and you must agree that you will not rent, sell, lend, or otherwise dispose of your items for at least one year after you arrive in Spain.
You must import your belongings within three months of your arrival in Spain. If you expect your shipments to arrive later than that, you will need to apply for a special permit and be prepared to pay higher taxes and pay duty.
If your paperwork is not in order, you can expect some headaches. Spanish customs officials will likely charge you additional taxes and fees and you could face a substantial delay in processing. If the problems are not cured within a month, your items will be declared “abandoned” and auctioned off.
You will also need to obtain an EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) to apply to your shipment in order for it to clear customs.
Here are some of the required documents you must provide. Check with your local Spanish embassy to receive the most current guidance.
- Comprehensive inventory with box-by-box packing list and estimated values
- Spanish residence or work permit
- NIE (Numero de Identification de Extranjero)
- Certificate of Change of Residence from your home country that affirms that you have lived outside of Spain for at least 12 months but have terminated residence in your home country
- Power of Attorney to authorize customs officials to process and clear your shipment
- Bill of Lading
- Proof of address in Spain – this could be documentation such as a home purchase agreement or lease of one year or more
- Valid passport
- Treasury department registration
Moving a personal vehicle to Spain
If you have owned your vehicle for at least six months prior to your move, you are welcome to import it to Spain tax and duty-free. Check with your local Spanish embassy before you depart to ensure that you have the proper paperwork.
Here are some of the documents that Spanish customs officials will require:
- Clean title
- Registration from your home country
- Proof of purchase
- Valid passport
- Spanish ID card
- International auto insurance
- International driver’s license
- Spanish Residence/Work permits
If you are moving your vehicle from North America, your car will need to be modified substantially. These adjustments to your steering, brakes, and acceleration will need to be completed by a qualified mechanic.
