Moving International to or From Macedonia

Moving Overseas to or From Macedonia
Most people ship their belongings via shipping container when they move overseas. A full container offers 40 feet of space and is usually enough to pack one vehicle and half of 2-bedroom household. Or you could choose to use the whole container for your personal items and do a half container for your vehicle.
The cost for a full container, moved from New York City to Skopje, will be between $7,400 - $10,100. There are additional costs as well, and some of those are harder to estimate. Working with an international shipper is the best way to get a cost estimate you can count on.
Three Movers is a top-rated international hauling company that can help you with your relocation needs. We offer free entry of your imported goods for household effects, a complete inventory, and an international driving permit to help make your move as smooth as possible. We also work with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that your household goods are treated with respect and your personal effects are packed with care.
Will I owe taxes for my household imports?
You will be expected to pay customs duty and VAT (value-added tax) for your household imports.
- Here is how your customs duty will be calculated:
- Value of goods + cost of shipping, x 25% is your customs duty
- Here is how your VAT is calculated:
- Customs duty taken from above + 18% is your value added tax
To prove your eligibility to import these personal items, you must be able to provide the following documents to customs officials when you arrive:
- Valid passport
- Macedonian ID card (temporary acceptable)
- Shipping invoice
- Proof of employment in Macedonia
- Bill of Lading
- Proof of residence in Macedonia
- Import permit for any electronics
If you are bringing any consumer electronics with you, such as a television, blender, computer, or other device, you will need to obtain an import permit specifically for these items.
For North Americans, a note of caution: your electronics are not designed for use on European power circuits. In North America, most small appliances are configured to operate on 110/120 volts. Even if you could plug these items into a European outlet, the 240/250 volts hitting your television will destroy it.
What do I need to know about importing a vehicle to Macedonia?
Before importing vehicles to Macedonia for personal use, you must make sure you’re your vehicle will be accepted. Macedonian customs officials will not permit the entry of any nonconforming vehicles more than 10 years old, for example, and your vehicle will need to be equipped with a mechanical catalyst system.
Once you arrive in Macedonia with your vehicle, you must present copies of your vehicle registration, purchase invoice, European Technical Standards certification and other documents showing your vehicle’s technical specifications.
If you are shifting to Macedonia from North America, these technical requirements become even more onerous. North American vehicles are driven on the right side of the road, whereas in Macedonia vehicles are driven on the left side. In order to meet European Technical Standards, your vehicle must undergo extensive mechanical modifications.
