Overseas Moving Companies Greece To Germany
Germany is famous for many things. From castles to cathedrals, Germany is a nation steeped in history and culture. Maybe their history isn’t as ancient as Greek history, but the history of Germany has lessons to share about tragedy and triumph, resilience and reconciliation.
Today, Germany is a modern democracy, central to the European continent and an essential member of the EU community. The standard of living is high, with world-class healthcare and educational institutions. While you may need to sacrifice your proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, you will benefit from Germany’s location convenient to many other countries in the EU.
If you are moving internationally for the first time, there is a lot to learn. The purpose of this guide is to share some of what you need to know to make an overseas relocation to Germany. Read on to learn more.
What Does international moving to Germany Cost?
When you transport your household items to Germany via overseas shipping, you can choose either a half-container or full-container. The half-container offers 20 feet of space, and the full-container gives you the whole 40 feet. While you will need to work with a shipper to get a comprehensive quote, container shipping rates are available online and serve as a helpful baseline. To move a full container from Greece to Germany, you can expect to pay under 3,000 euros. A half-container can be shipped for as little as 2,500 euros.
Importing Household Goods to Germany
International moves can be complicated. You will have to pay fees for transport, logistics, handling, storage, and much more. When you decide what should stay and what should go, you need to consider what you are willing to pay to bring it with you. Some items will be cheaper to replace when you arrive in Germany.
Customs duty and taxes are another consideration. In fact, one of the first things people ask about is customs duty and taxes and for good reason. Unwelcome surprises at the border can cost you thousands of dollars, and nobody wants to see items that should have been left behind destroyed or confiscated. That's why it's advisable to work with international moving companies and relocation services who understand the terrain quite well and can advise you in advance on what to take or drop.
If you are moving to Germany permanently, you can import your household goods free of custom and border taxes.
To qualify for tax and duty-free imports, you must provide documentation to demonstrate:
- Official termination for your residence in Greece (such as a lease termination or sale agreements for your previous home in Greece)
- Proof of new residence in Germany (a lease agreement, Einwohnermeldeamt [German police registration], or a letter from your German employer.)
- Proof of residency outside Germany for at least 12 months
As always, you should reach out to your local German embassy for current guidance. There are some exceptions to the tax-free rules, as well as items that are strictly prohibited from import altogether.
Importing a Vehicle to Germany
As with household goods, your vehicle can be imported tax and duty-free when you move to Germany permanently. (Note: Your vehicle will be tax and duty-free as it pertains to customs only. Germany has other taxes associated with vehicle ownership that you will be required to pay.)
Even though Greece isn’t that far from Germany, modifications to your vehicle may still be required, particularly to your headlights, emissions, brakes, or even tires. Even if your vehicle meets all the technical and mechanical requirements, your vehicle will be inspected for roadworthiness and adherence to German safety standards. Basically, they aren’t going to let you on the Autobahn until they know your vehicle can be safely driven. Contact your local Kfz-Zulassungsstelle (German motor vehicle registration office) to learn more.
Once you have processed your vehicle through customs, you must register your vehicle in Germany. Vehicle registration in Germany requires:
- Valid Passport or Other ID
- Proof of Vehicle Ownership (free of liens or encumbrances)
- Proof of Address in Germany
- Customs Clearance
- Export Permit
- Vehicle Registration from your country of origin
- Insurance Card
- Proof of Roadworthiness and Emissions Testing
- Certification from the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registry attesting that the vehicle has never been registered in Germany
