The Difference Between Local & Long Distance Transporting
Though the process and work involved are often the same (or at least similar), there are some key differences between local and long distance moving that you should understand. In this article, we’ll define the difference between the two and break down what that means for you as a customer so that you’ll know what to expect—and how to plan accordingly—for hauling day.
Local Shifting
A local move refers to anything within the same city and up to a certain mileage threshold, usually around 100 miles. It should be noted; however, that different transporters may have their own definition of what qualifies as a local move. Some may limit shifting requests to anything within 40 miles, while others may extend as far as several hundred miles, or what can be done in one day. Local hauling is easier for obvious reasons related to the distance, but they’re typically easier to plan for as well. Not only can you handle some or all of the move yourself with the help of friends or family, but the time commitment is also easier to navigate since local shifting doesn’t involve days of travel or time out of your schedule.

Long Distance Relocation
Long distance moving is anything that falls outside of the scope of a local move, however that particular company may choose to define it. It requires more planning and preparation than a local transport for a few reasons. Number one is that you’re more likely to enlist the help of a professionals with a haul since it is a more labor intensive process. By the same token, a longer driving distance means that you’re less likely to be in a position to do much of the moving yourself if you’re busy with work, planning, and managing everyday life. While you may be able to take an hour out of your day to run a car load of items to your new home for a local haul, that’s not an option for long distance transporting.

How Different Types of Moves Are Priced
One of the biggest differences between a local and long distance transport is how they are priced. A local haul is almost always billed by the hour and based on how many people you need to help. You simply request how much labor you need for the job and pay accordingly based on a set per hour, per person cost. A long distance move; however, is based on the amount and weight of your belongings, as well as the distance you’re relocating. Naturally, a longer shifting distance with heavier furniture will cost more than a shorter move with less. When you’re transporting long distance, the carrier will assess how much you have (usually in person) and then give you an estimate based on the weight and distance of the haul.
