This guide covers all you need to know about container shipping costs.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Shipping

While we can easily send your container to Taiwan, the following criteria should be taken into account when selecting the freight option that best suits your budget and needs.

The Volume/Weight of the Goods

The type of shipment you select has a significant impact on your shipping costs. Sea freight, for example, is more concerned with the size of your goods, whilst air freight is more concerned with their weight. As a result, the manner of delivery you use will be determined by your items.

Type of Transport

International shipment to Taiwan can be accomplished by air, sea, or land (truck). However, the most popular modes of transport are sea freight and air freight. Ocean freight is the less expensive of the two options, and it is significantly less expensive than air freight. Air freight shipping, on the other hand, provides the benefit of speed because your things arrive faster than by sea, which can take anywhere from 15 to 85 days depending on the distance.

The Journey Distance

Everyone recognizes that the longer the shipping distance, the higher the cost. Additionally, the cost of shipping is typically influenced when your things are delivered from door to door or port to port.

Destination Port

Every country has customs duties and taxes for goods that are imported. Shipping to Taiwan requires a flat $44 rate. Taiwan has a duty rate ranging from 0% to 30%, with an average of 6.25 percent. Items worth less than 3000 TWD are duty-free. Taiwanese sales tax is 5%, depending on CIF (cost, insurance, and freight).

Peak Season

When it comes to international shipping, there is typically a high season. This usually occurs between August and October, with a minor occurrence in January and February. Because shipping is normally more expensive during these times, it’s best to ship your goods in the middle of the year.

Which Size of Shipping Container Works Best for Me?

It is dependent on the size of your merchandise. Your goods will most likely be transported in a 20-foot or 40-foot container. A 20-foot container can hold the contents of a three-bedroom home, whereas a 40-foot container can hold twice as much.

Difference Between FCL and LCL

When you pay for a full container for your shipments, the whole container load is used. Clients who are unable to estimate the size of their things or believe they are too small to pay for a 40ft container may choose the less than container load option, in which case they will share the container with other clients who choose the same shipping choice. Mind you, FCL travel times are usually faster, whereas LCL is less expensive.

Additional Shipping Cost

Guiding you also entails going to great lengths to provide you with the information you need to expedite your shipment. This is why we are bringing these additional expenses to your attention:

  • Customs duties
  • General Rate Increase (GRI)
  • Container inspection fees
  • Inland delivery charges
  • Quarantine fees
  • Insurance cover

● A certificate of origin is also required for designated commodities such as sedans, other small passenger cars and chassis, tobacco and alcohol products, and some agricultural products.

● Shipments of agricultural products, plants, and animals to Taiwan may require certificates of inspection or quarantine issued in the country of origin and are subject to review and quarantine upon entry.

Most documents presented for use in customs clearance processing must be prepared in Chinese to avoid delays and expedite clearance processing.

The Bill of Lading is a document signed by a carrier, such as a railroad or shipping line, that acknowledges receipt of goods and incorporates an agreement to transport the goods to a specified destination. A negotiable title document that requires the delivery of goods must be distinguished from negotiable commercial paper that requires the payment of money, such as notes and bills of exchange.

A member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since 2002, Taiwan complies with international trade agreements. It bases its tariff schedule on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System of the Customs Cooperation Council.

Taiwan continues to make unilateral improvements to its tariff structure on finished goods and raw materials. In 2021, the average nominal tariff rate for industrial products was 4.14 percent and 15.06 percent for agricultural products. The overall average nominal tariff rate for imported goods was 6.34 percent. U.S. industry continues to request that Taiwan lower tariffs on imports of many products.

Before shipping a container to Taiwan, you must first study the difference between taxes, tariffs, and duties.

Customs duties are dependent on product information, while tariffs are fees incurred to products from countries for specific times. Lastly, tax rates are calculated on the absolute value of the goods imported into the country.

Containers can be lost, destroyed, or stolen in some cases. When this occurs, the cargo interest is enforced by a cargo insurance policy. The majority of cargo insurance policies are written on an “all-risk” basis. This means that the insured is protected against loss or damage except for risks expressly excluded in the policy, such as loss or damage caused by the insured’s willful destruction of the goods or the inherent vice of the goods.

Waterproof – All new and used containers will be waterproof and come with a product guarantee. However, containers sold in “AS-IS” condition may have holes or crooked impairment, such as damaged corner posts. They are priced accordingly but are not guaranteed to be wind and watertight.

Ventilation – Vents on the upper part of the side walls are created for shipping containers. These might make containers placed inside a wet or cold surrounding prone to moisture and eventually become rusty, so it would be wiser to have your ventilation checked now and then.
