What Is the Cheapest Day to Move?

What Is the Cheapest Day to Move?

Because moving to a new house is quite stressful on a person and their family, we have compiled some of the most common questions regarding the best time to make a haul. If you have the freedom to choose when you can transport, why not pick a period of the year, month, or week that will help you save money and make your transport smoother?

Here are some tips on how to schedule your haul in order to save some money. Before going through the best moments to move, we should mention that scheduling ahead of time is better than programming a last-minute hauling, so start browsing for companies early on.

Local or Long-Distance Move?

Whether your move is long-distance or local, the price of your haul depends on a cumulus of factors that weigh more or less. Naturally, a longer distance will mean a higher price, but certain costs apply to short-distance transport as well, meaning that you will get a cheaper price per mile when relocating further.

When choosing your moving company, we recommend going with a local one if you are shifting to the same state. For cross-country transport, you can contact bigger companies, but sometimes smaller companies offer this service as well.

How Is the Price Calculated?

Calculating the price of a move takes a few variables into account. First, you have to find out if the company you are considering is working for a fixed price or at an hourly rate.

The factors that weigh in when calculating a moving price are:

  • The distance
  • The number of relocators needed to load and unload the items
  • The volume of your belongings
  • Accessibility of your home and your items
  • Weather
  • Demand in the business at a certain moment

Although it’s easy to predict a trend in the price levels, depending on these factors, it’s unlikely to know exactly how much it would cost, before contacting a company. When asking for a price estimate, ask about other fees that may apply, and what does the price include.

What’s the Best Time of the Year to Relocate?

If you can schedule your move, do it off-season. Summer is the most expensive time of the year for transporting because the demand is high. While summer has a lot of benefits when shifting, by choosing to haul before the winter holidays or during early spring, you can save a significant amount of money.

The same principle applies more or less to other timeframes, which we will go through one by one below. As a rule, keep in mind that moving companies tend to monetize the highest demand season by raising their prices during that period. Also, to keep the client flow a bit smoother and not overwhelm themselves during summer, they motivate customers to move during the off-season as well, by slightly lowering their prices.

What Is the Best Time of the Month to Shift?

Staying away from the most popular times applies to the time of the month as well. Since the beginning and end of a month are the most expensive, we recommend scheduling your move around the middle of the month.

The reason why the start and end of a month are in high demand is that people generally try to work with their leases, which mostly start on the first of each month.

Is It Better to Relocate on a Weekday or During the Weekend?

Choosing a weekday - ideally from Monday to Thursday - is going to be less expensive than hauling during the weekend, when the demand is higher. Since most people work during the week, they don’t want to take a day off for shifting and prefer to schedule during the weekend.

If you can do the move during the week, we do recommend doing so, as long as you schedule the hour properly. The catch here is that traffic might be more intense during the week, which could potentially lead to delays and higher costs.
