Tips For Moving Collectibles, Antiques, & Valuables
Moving anything valuable, especially collectibles, antiques, or valuable belongings, can be a real challenge if you’ve never done it before. Even if you have successfully shifted collectibles, that doesn’t mean that every necessary step was taken to protect the items in your collection. Collectibles come in many different forms, from collectors’ cards to wine collections to fine art—all of which require a specialized custom approach to relocate safely.
The Right Sized Box
The packing process is one of the easiest ways to make sure your collection is safe during a long distance or cross country transport. And the longer the shift you’re making, the more vital it is a preparatory step to protect everything. Finding the right sized box is one of the first and most important things you can do. Anything that is fragile or at risk of breaking during a haul should be packed in a box that fits the dimensions of the items inside of it closely. The more room there is inside of the box for items to move, the more likely that something bad can happen. Ideally, you want to find boxes that have just enough room to pack everything with a little space left over for padding or bubble wrap for maximum protection.

Don’t Overfill Boxes
Just as it’s important to find the right size boxes and use the appropriate packing materials to protect your belongings, it’s equally important that you not overfill the boxes. This is a good general piece of hauling advice, but it’s essential when packing anything that requires some extra care. Heavy boxes are not only harder to move on your own, but also present the risk of the bottom falling out of the box, which can be a disaster. The more delicate the items you’re packing, the less you should put in each box and the more you should focus on protecting them with additional packing supplies to absorb the bumps and bounces that are inevitable inside the storage area of a relocating truck.

Label Appropriately
Once you have everything packed up and ready to relocate, make sure that all boxes with valuables, collectibles, or antiques are clearly labeled as such. Not only should the boxes be labeled to indicate what is in them, but they should also be clearly marked as fragile and an indication that they should not be flipped or set on their side. It’s easy to think that damage occurs only once the moving boxes are inside the truck, but it’s just as easy to break delicate items by turning a box sideways or upside down, which can quickly undo all of the work you’ve put into protecting the contents of the box.
Hire A Specialty Carrier
If you’re working with a shifter to move your valuables, it’s a good idea to seek out a company that has specialty hauling services that cater specifically to collections and fragile items. This is sometimes referred to as “white glove” moving, which indicates they will take an extra level of care when transporting and handling your items during the process.
