Tips For A Great Housewarming Party
Published by Chris Townsend
A housewarming party is a relatively easy event to host in the grand scheme of things. It’s usually informal, involves your closest friends, and you don’t have to do a lot to prepare, which is nice since you’ve likely had your hands full getting settled in and decorating your new home. But there are a few simple guidelines you should keep in mind when hosting a housewarming party, both for the convenience of your guests, and to keep things simple on your end. Here are some things you should keep in mind.
Timeframe
You don’t want to wait too long before hosting a housewarming party since it will lose some of its appeal and “newness” to your acquaintances if you’ve already lived there for months and they’ve been over a few times. Likewise, you don’t want to have a housewarming too soon either since you’ll need time to get all your furniture arranged properly and have your home at least reasonably well decorated before showing it off. As a general rule of thumb, somewhere between three to six months is an ideal time, though you can do it earlier if you feel comfortable with a shorter timeframe. The main idea here is not to wait more than six months or even a year before showing off you new home, which won’t feel very new at that point.
Time of Day & Week
You’ll want to find a time of day and day of the week that is convenient for your guests, which usually means a weekend day in the afternoon. It’s much more of a commitment to go to a party after working a full day than it is to find time on the weekend afternoon. It’s also a good idea to give your guests an open window of when they can drop by, rather than having a firm starting time. An open time slot of a couple hours can help your friends and neighbors make arrangements if they need a babysitter, have work commitments, or they have kids that play sports.

Include Your Neighbors
Don’t just limit you guest list to your closest friends and family (although you certainly can if that’s your preference.) A housewarming is an ideal time to get to know your neighbors and make some connections in your neighborhood. If you don’t make an effort early on to get to know your neighbors, it’s a process that can take months or even years before you really get to know them amid the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life.
Have A Spread
No party is complete with food and drinks, and that includes a housewarming party. You don’t have to get too fancy the spread, but having a selection of finger foods or hors d’oeuvres for people to snack on is always a nice touch. Along the same lines, you should have some variety with your drink selections too. It’s fine to have alcoholic drinks as a housewarming but remember that some people might be brining their kids, or not want to drink. Having options is always a good thing when it comes to food and drink.
Plan A Tour
You should be prepared to give a tour of your home as guests file in—and you’ll probably have to run through it a couple times, depending on when your guests will arrive. It’s not a bad idea to take a stroll through your home and have some planned remarks, or at least a planned path of what you want to show your guests. Remember, you don’t have to show them every room if you don’t want to, just the highlight the parts of your home you want to show off.
