Vanuatu Container Shipping Cost
There are a lot of questions when it comes to being able to ship internationally. Some people don’t even know where to start. Three Movers is the company you need to call. You will be guided by our team of experts in every step of this complex operation, making sure that your shipment process will be smooth sailing.
Factors That Affect the Charges of Shipping
There are a few main factors to consider when shipping internationally. These are:
- The volume/weight of the items to be shipped: Sea freight services take into account the volume of your shipment. The more you want to ship, the more costly it gets. Air freights focus more on weight.
- The type of transport: Air freight is the fastest option available. However, it is also the most expensive. The sea freight cargo option takes its time to reach the destination, but it is significantly cheaper than the former. For an island country like Vanuatu, this would be the better option.
- Distance: The farther the shipment will travel from its point of departure, the more costly it’ll get.
- The destination port: It is possible to have varying port fees. In Vanuatu, there are two major ports that take international shipments: Port Vila vanuatu and Luganville. There are also smaller ports throughout the island country that can be considered.
- Peak season: As of 2021, the peak season is between August to October. Shipping within this season will affect the cost of your shipment.
Which Size of Shipping Container is Best for Me?
There are 16 different types of containers to choose from but they are usually used by large businesses and companies. The two most common containers that customers use are the 20ft and the 40ft containers.
The 20ft container can fit about 100 washing machines, or approximately 3 bedrooms’ worth of items, assuming you are not a hoarder. If you are transporting a car, it’ll fit in this container but there won’t be any space left for other items. Just double that and that is the capacity of the 40ft container.
If your items aren’t enough to fill any of the containers, you can always opt for the Less Than Cargo Load option (LCL). With this option, you will be sharing one container with others who chose this mode.
The most cost-efficient option, especially if transporting a bulk of items, is the Full Cargo Load (FCL). You’ll have a whole container to yourself. If you can pack it up fully, this is also safer for your items.

Understanding the Different Types of Freight Transportation
Shipping to the island country of Vanuatu, you have two modes of transportation available:
- Air Freight Transportation: Using this mode ensures that your shipment arrives in just a few days in most cases. This is the best option for those customers who are pressed for time. However, this can get pretty expensive especially when you’re shipping heavier items since weight is a critical consideration when it comes to this mode of transportation.
- Sea Freight Transportation: If you are not in a hurry, this mode of transportation is a good choice. Using a cargo ship is guaranteed to be slow but it is one of the cheaper options. You can also ship heavier items with this mode of transportation without incurring expensive charges.
Additional Shipping Prices
International shipping lines can have some additional freight costs. They are:
- Custom duties
- Container inspection fees
- VAT
- Inland delivery charges
- Insurance
- Quarantine Fees
Custom Duty charges vary from country to country. In Vanuatu, rates on imports range from zero to 50%. The higher duty rates are mostly on luxury goods while the rates on basic necessity items ranges from 5% to 15%.

FCL, or Full Cargo Load, is when one client fills a container. The client is responsible for packing and unpacking all of the items that will be shipped. Once this is sent for shipping, the cargo will go straight to the destination without being reworked at multiple ports. This is the faster one between the two modes of loading.
An LCL involves the consolidation of cargoes from clients who all chose this mode of loading. The shipping company will collect the air cargo and will be in charge of the packing and unpacking at the ports they are to be delivered to. An LCL shipment may go through multiple ports and will be reworked through each disembarkation.
You will be able to track your in-transit cargo via the “cargo tracking system”. It can be used from anywhere and anytime in the world. Through this, you can extract information about your shipment such as its destination and where it is currently. To use this, you will need your container number, your Bill of Lading, your booking number, and the shipping line.
A 50’ straightway customs clearance will be needed for the delivery of a 20’ container. For a 40’ container, you will need around 110’ straightway clearance. An overhead clearance of 17’ is also required.
It is not required but it is highly recommended to ensure that you are protected throughout the whole process. Even if you refuse to get insurance for your cargo, the container rental company will usually require you to insure their box.
Customs have established a standard air cargo clearance processing for goods entering the country: • Maximum of 3 days for declaration of goods selected for physical examination, tagged as “Red Lane”; • Maximum of 2 days for declaration of goods selected for documentary examination, tagged as “Yellow Lane”; • 5 to 10 minutes for declarations directly assessed, tagged as “Green Lane”.
