How Much Does It Cost To Ship A Container To Tunisia?
When relocating, you have several factors to consider. It also depends on where you are going to pick them up. There are certain restrictions and certifications that you will have to be wary of if you want a smoother transaction when it comes to relocating and its logistics. Sounds daunting, doesn’t it? This is why Three Movers is here to provide you generalized information on hauling costs.
Factors That Affect the Cost
When shipping a container internationally, there are some factors to consider when it comes to the cost such as:
- The volume and weight of the items to be hauled. The heavier the container is, the more costly it will be. The same idea applies to the number of goods inside of it.
- The type of transportation used. There are two modes of transportation to choose from; it’s either via air or sea. Air freight is 5x more costly the most sea freight services yet it hauls faster.
- Distance: The greater the length of the place you’re transporting from, the more expensive it will be.
- The destination port: The largest port in Tunisia is Rades Port which is located in La Goulette, Tunis. It can handle an 80% approximate of containerized traffic and movement of rolling units with over 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units per year.
- The peak period. If you don’t want expensive air freight transportation costs, it is best to avoid shifting during the months of February, April, and May. You can save more if you ship during the month of November while the demand for air freight services is low.
Which Size of Container Works Best for Me?
It can easily become stressful to plan which mode of transportation you ought to avail for your container’s shipment, especially if you do it alone. What more if you try to look for the best hauling container that can fit your goods just right? That is why we are here to assist you throughout the process, and move your belongings from door to door.
Most of our clients choose between 20-foot or 40-foot containers. Can you just imagine fitting the entire contents of a three-bedroom house into the container? That’s how a 20-foot is like. For a 40-foot container, just visualize an average garage and think of it as how huge the container will be. This means that you can easily fit a vehicle into it and have it hauled wherever you want to.
Other than your container’s size, you must also take into consideration its type of load mode. A full-size usually goes best with the Full Container Loads (FCL) option. On the other hand, if you don’t have enough goods to fit into the container, you will be advised to take the smaller choice which is called the Less Than a Container option.
Average Transporting Rates Estimates
FCL is best for transporting lots of boxes, pallets and anything which will require a full container hauling of up to 45,000lbs.

Additional Costs
We have already mentioned the factors that might affect the shifting cost of your container and these are:
- The volume and weight
- The type of transportation used
- Distance
- The destination port
- The peak period
But that’s not all to consider. Due to other relocating procedures, there are additional costs to expect. Among are:
- Insurance.
- Custom fees. Imported goods in Tunisia are subject to tariff rates that can go as high as 200%. These rates skyrocketed to 36% on goods like salmon, natural honey, avocados, and pineapples. Products like washing machines and video monitors were raised up to 30% tariff rates. Even products like lubricating oils, soap, adhesive preparations, tanning extracts, pesticides, pipes and hoses, screws, and drilling tools are now subject to a 15% tariff.
- Inspection fees.
- General Rate Increase (GRI). As the demand for shipping on a specific route increases, the price goes up as well.
- Delivery Times. If expedited transporting is required, additional costs will also prevail.

Once an accident happens, a cargo insurance policy enforces the cargo interest. Most cargo insurance policies are underwritten on an “all-risk basis.” This means that the insured is covered for risk of loss or damage except for those risks that are expressly excluded in the policy, such as loss or damage due to willful destruction of the goods by the insured or the inherent vice of the goods.
Tunisian law prohibits the export of foreign currency from Tunisia as payment for imports before the presentation to a bank of documents confirming shipment of the merchandise to the country.
Usually, freight forwarder or Tunisian Customs documents serve this purpose. Importers obtain hard currency for payment by presenting these documents to their commercial banks. To ensure payment, U.S. exporters have used confirmed, irrevocable letters of credit and letters of credit authorizing “payment against documents” in past transactions.
Other than applicable import license requirements, no specific documentation is required to import goods.
The Bill of Lading is a document executed by a carrier, such as a railroad or shipping line, acknowledging receipt of goods and embodying an agreement to transport the goods to a stated destination. Such a negotiable document of title, which calls for the delivery of goods, must be distinguished from negotiable commercial paper such as notes and bills of exchange, which call for the money.

Imported goods in Tunisia can be subject to tariff rates as high as 200%, depending on the product. The 2018 Finance Law increased tariffs on certain products. Tariff rates were increased to 36% on products such as salmon, natural honey, avocados, and pineapples, and to 30% on washing machines and video monitors. Also, some products originally exempt are now subject to a 15% tariff, such as lubricating oils, tanning extracts, soap, adhesive preparations, pesticides, vinyl, pipes and hoses, hides and skins, kraft paper, sewing thread, natural pearls, screws, bolts, drilling tools, and dishwashers.
Goods are subject to an additional customs formality fee, currently amounting to 3% of the total duties paid on the import. Certain imports are also subject to a value-added tax (VAT). Tunisia’s introductory VAT rates are 19%, 13%, and 7%, with most goods covered by the 19% rate. Tunisia calculates VAT on the base price of the goods plus any import duties, surcharges, and consumption taxes. A consumption tax applies to certain imported and similar locally produced items. Rates on most products vary from 10% to as high as 150%. The highest rates apply to luxury items. Automobiles with large engine capacity also carry an increased consumption tax, with up to 277% for gasoline-fueled engines and 360% for diesel-fueled engines.

Customs duties are dependent on product information, while tariffs are fees incurred to products from countries for specific times. Lastly, tax rates are calculated on the absolute value of the goods imported into the country.
Tariffs are fees imposed by a government for categories of products at specific times.
In terms of implementation, VAT and GST are indistinguishable, but each is applied to various products based on the country importing into.
