Factors That Affect the Cost of Hauling
The cost of relocating a container internationally is determined by several factors, including container size, load size, loading and delivery options, and shipping method. We'll go through each category in detail to assist you in planning and budgeting for overseas hauling costs.
Container Size
When exporting items internationally, you'll need to figure out what size of shifting container you'll need. Shipping containers are available in a variety of sizes and prices. The larger alternatives are more expensive, but they provide additional packing and shipping volume.
Load Size
The size of your load can also affect the price of transporting your container internationally. "Full container load (FCL)" and "less than a container load (LCL)" are the two categories used to describe load sizes.
Loading and Delivery Options
The way you load and deliver your items has an impact on the total cost. When it comes to loading and delivery methods, there are typically three options to consider. Port-to-port, door-to-door, and drop-and-fill are the three options.
As the name implies, "port to port" entails transporting your goods from one port to another. It's the most cost-effective option. The "door to door" option is the most straightforward and comprehensive option. The hauler will load the products from your house or office, then unload and unpack them when they arrive at their destination. Door-to-door moving is often the most expensive choice.
Finally, in a drop and fill move, the freight company will deliver a shipping container to you, which you will be responsible for filling and unloading when it arrives at its destination.
Relocating Method
There are various options for shipping a container internationally, each with its own cost, benefits, and cons. There are three types of freight: land, sea, and air.

Understanding the Different Types of Freight Transportation
- Land Freight: Trucks and railroads are frequently utilized for domestic and transcontinental shipping. Land transportation has the advantage of being inexpensive and generally efficient, but it has the disadvantage of being limited to areas that can be reached by road or rail.
- Sea Freight: This is the most cost-effective but also the most time-consuming method of exporting internationally. Sea freight delivery times range from a few days to several weeks, depending on the route and destination.
- Air Freight: This isn't used often to send a container internationally because of its exorbitant cost. When compared to sea freight, air freight is more expensive and the fastest means.
Difference Between FCL And LCL
The term "less container load" (LCL) implies your stuff will most likely be shipped in the same container as someone else's. LCL is a wonderful choice for transporting small items or shipping on a tight budget. A full container load (FCL) implies your things are not mixed in with those of another party, it is a much easier alternative for both the sender and the relocation provider.
Additional Hauling Costs
You may incur additional hauling expenses, which include the following:
- Insurance
- Import duties
- Storage fee (if the shipping company has to provide a temporary store for your goods
- Value-added-tax (Tanzania's regular VAT rate is 18% in mainland Tanzania and 15% in Tanzania Zanzibar)
- General Rate Increase

Frequently Asked Questions
For sea transportation, the maximum weight for the commonly used ISO 20ft container is 55,000lbs. If the container is to be transported by land, however, the maximum approved weight will drop to 44,000lbs. This means that the contents being shipped will be repacked into two containers and transported by road. The maximum weight for a 40ft container is 67,000lbs. Note that these values don’t apply in all cases as shipping containers are manufactured differently. Check the label on the door of a container to get the exact maximum weight a container can be loaded with.
Insurance is important and you should consider getting good cover for your items. This is because no matter how careful you are in packing, planning, and hiring, things can still go wrong. Your cargo can be misplaced, or lost, or damaged. In such an event, proper insurance coverage can reduce the effect of your loss.
Depending on the type of cargo being imported, it will take officially between 1 and 7 days for the cargo to clear. This might extend to a couple of weeks if it is peak shipping season or if there is a public holiday leading to a pile-up of containers to inspect and clear. Incomplete or inaccurate documents will extend clearance time as well as the importation of restricted or prohibited items.
The documentation process is done online through Tanzania Customs Integrated System (TANCIS) for imports and exports and can be completed before the arrival of the goods. Note that the clearance system automatically rejects incomplete declarations or declarations having insufficient descriptions through Integrated Query System (IQS) which is in TANCIS. Importers in Tanzania are required to establish whether or not the goods to be imported are subject to Pre-Shipment Verification of Conformity (PVoC). In general, any shipment valued at over USD 5,000 is subject to PVoC. Some goods are exempt from PVoC. Importers must provide full contact details of actual suppliers. Documents needed for this process include the final invoice, bill of lading, packing list, exemption documents.
Items that are not allowed into a country are called restricted items while items that require a permit are called restricted items. The reason for the ban or restriction ranges from national security to the preservation of culture. Narcotics and internationally prohibited drugs are banned. Live animals, plants, firearms, and ammunition require permits from relevant authorities. Tanzania announced a nationwide ban on the use of plastic bags starting from June 1, 2019. Importers are warned to avoid bringing plastic bags into the country.
Certain duty exemptions are made based on bilateral and multilateral trade agreements or investment incentive packages. A selected list of sensitive goods is rated at higher rates, up to 100 percent. In addition, a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 18 percent is charged on all non-EAC imports, unless exemption is received from the Tanzania Investment Center or Ministry of Finance. As part of the East African Customs Union, Tanzania imposes the EAC common external tariff on goods from non-EAC countries. The tariffs range from 0 percent for raw materials to 10 percent for industrial used goods and 25 percent for consumer goods.
Shipping duty is a fee collected on imports and some exports by a country’s customs authorities. A good’s value will usually dictate the shipping duty. This is called import duty in some cases. Shipping duties serve to raise income for the local government and to give a market advantage to locally grown or produced goods that are not subject to import duties. A third related goal is sometimes to penalize a particular nation by charging high import duties on its products. Shipping taxes are fees based on a standard fixed percentage of the added costs of importing a product into a country. They are called value-added tax (VAT) in most countries.
For adequate space, you will need twice the area of the shipping container in your home. This is to make maneuvering with the container possible. For a 20ft container, you will need at least 40ft in length and approximately 15ft in width and height. For a 40ft container, you will need 80ft in length with a 15ft width and height space. If you can’t provide adequate space, consider delivering the container by crane. This will increase the delivery cost, however.
