Cost of Shipping container from Iran

The cost for shipping a container from Iran ship can vary depending on several factors, most notably the size or type of the shipment. Instead of focusing on weight alone, it is important to consider the dimensions (length x width x height) and volume (length x width x height). Shipment’s with short lengths or small volumes tend to be more expensive

In addition to the size, shipments from Iran often have a high percentage of breakage and loss which is usually reflected in the price per container, as well as any additional expenses that may accrue during transit or delivery. This reduces overall costs for companies shipping overseas from Iran. For example, the value of the shipment is US$10,000 and it is broken/ lost in transit, this could result in an additional 5-6% loss it

How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container?

The cost of shipping a container to Iran is approximately $860-$1080. This includes the base cost, booking fee, and port service charge. Additional charges include 2.5% conveyance tax; Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) surcharge; and war risk insurance, if applicable. If you need to ship inside of Iran, it will be $500 more in fees.

Shipping a container to Iran is very competitive in comparison to other countries. There are currently no surcharges or quotas on shipping containers to Iran from the United States. The only additional charges that may apply would be the port service fee charged by cargo terminal operators and customs brokers at the destination.

How much does it cost to ship a 20ft container?

One of the most common questions we receive from customers is how much it costs to ship a container to Iran.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy question to answer because there are several different variables that influence the overall cost of shipping cargo to Iran. There’s no such thing as “one size fits all”. Every shipment is unique and has different variables.

What is Less than Container Load (LCL)

Less than container load (LCL) is the term used to describe any number of products or items that are loaded into an overseas container shipping service container without having to fill the entire space. Because of this, it takes on the cost of shipping one full container load (FCL). Accordingly, LCL container shipping costs are cheaper than FCL shipping containers. You need to know about the nitty-gritty of LCL shipping:

Price:

The cost of shipping a less than container load (LCL) shipment is cheaper than the price of a full container load (FCL). While you can save on costs initially, remember that it will take longer for your goods to reach their destination

LCL shipments need to be consolidated with other manufacturers and suppliers’ goods in order to fill an entire container. This means that you might end up paying more money in the long run because of all the extra added charges. The only way around this is if you keep your LCL shipment consigned through one supplier, who in turn will consolidate the load with others.

Size:

An LCL shipment can be of any size or weight. As mentioned, you will end up paying more in transportation costs when your shipment is less than container load (LCL), which means that it is not complete and most likely not bulk either. Thus, if you are shipping a bulky item, make sure it fits in an actual container.

Time:

Because of the extra time that it takes for your LCL shipment to reach its destination, it is advised that you don’t choose less than container load (LCL) when shipping items worth thousands of dollars. The risk factor here is higher due to the length of time involved with getting your shipment to its destination.

Customs:

Full Container Load (FCL)

The time it takes for your shipment to clear customs and reach its destination is shorter when you choose a full container load (FCL). By choosing less than container load (LCL), these items will take longer to arrive at their final destination. This means that the risk factor in delayed delivery times increases.

It is assumed that the basis for this calculation is a full container load (FCL) of 20 ft. or 40 ft. in size, with an average weight of 25 tons per unit. 20-ft. units are much more common in shipments to Iran because Iran’s roads are not capable of handling 44-ton loads, for a 40 ft container will be included.

  • The cost of transporting a container from X to Y is determined by the following factors:
  • Type and number of trucks required
  • Availability and location of trucking facilities (inland terminals)
  • Transportation distance between terminal(s) and final destination, using the Standard Distribution Cost System (So additional costs for faster transport will be included)
  • Availability and location of rail terminals, as well as the type of railcar needed to carry the load. Inland trucking costs from a Pacific Northwest Port such as Seattle or Tacoma to inland destinations in Iran can run from $2,000 -$4,000 per 20 ft unit. The haul to the final destination in Iran will require several trucks since Iranian roads are not capable of handling 20 ft. (and larger) containers.

Iranian Customs procedures for clearing imports into the country is time-consuming and cumbersome; it is, therefore, necessary that containers be fast-tracked through customs, which can be done if the container arrives on a direct ship and is undersized (20 ft. and 40 ft), and thus not subject to “break bulk” procedures, which can slow down the customs clearing process considerably.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Documents Must I Provide When Shipping to Iran?

Just like in many other countries in the world, the necessary documents that our cargo movers at Three Movers are expected to submit to the Iran Customs Office include the Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, or Packing List, Customs Declaration, and Certificate of Origin (CO). In addition to these, a letter from the shipper may be required on some occasions. Therefore, it’s mandatory for our shippers to provide these particular documents before their goods are shipped to Iran.

What Do I Need to Know about Bill of Lading?

For starters, the term “Bill of Lading” may sound strange. However, the term signifies a highly significant legal document that you must make available before shipping to any country. The Bill of Lading, which could be represented as BL or BoL is important because it clarifies the type of goods, their volume, and the destination the cargo is being delivered to. Hence, we’re required to present it before the Iran Customs officials.

Furthermore, the BL additionally performs the function of a shipment receipt when your goods are shipped to the pre-specified region.

What Measures Should I Take If I Lose My Bill of Lading?

As previously stated, the Bill of Lading is an incredibly important piece of documentation. Thus, you should try as much as possible to safeguard it at all times. This guide is important because it’s not humanly possible for you to get a new Bill of Lading if you’ve permanently lost your original Bill of Lading. For instance, if it was burnt completely by a fire or stolen by a thief, you can’t find a replacement.

When these unpleasant circumstances occur, certain procedures can be made to help you ship your goods in the absence of a BoL.  These processes require the shipper to write a letter explaining the incident, obtain a court order, issue a letter of indemnity, acquire a bank guarantee, and provide a commercial invoice or packing list.

Consequently, when you’ve taken these measures and we’re completely satisfied with them, then we can ship the goods to the destination without a BoL.

What Goods Am I NOT Allowed to Ship to Iran?

In accordance with the doctrines of Islam and the laws of the Iran Customs, certain goods are prohibited and restricted from being shipped to Iran.  Some of these prohibited and restricted goods include illegal drugs, alcohol and alcoholic beverages, firearms, explosives and ammunition, weapons, short wave radios, pornographic materials, gambling equipment, perishable fruits and vegetables, pork products, plants, and soil.

Again, other restricted goods include pets (except you’ve been granted permission), and certain magazines, books, literature, photos, and films.

As such, we don’t ship these goods to Iran.

What Customs Taxes, Duties, and/or Fees Am I Expected to Pay for the Goods I’m Shipping to Iran?

When shipping to Iran, the customs duties are on an average about 30% of the CIF value of the goods. The tariffs vary from 0% for the most vital basic commodities to 100% for those few consumer goods that are ratified.

Additionally, customs duties are reasonably high in the free zones, summing up to 50% on some occasions. In addition to the customs duties, licensed importers are also required to pay customs taxes.

Are Shipping Containers Waterproof and Properly Ventilated?

Though some shipping containers are waterproof, a greater number of them are rather watertight.

Besides, to ensure that your containers are suitably ventilated, make sure they are designed with vents on the upper part of their side walls. Consequently, it’s important to routinely wipe moist and damp from the vents to prevent them from condensing and corroding.

What is the Maximum Weight That Can Be Loaded into a Container?

The mass of goods that a container can accommodate relies on the type of shipping container you choose.  Typically, a 20 ft container has a maximum gross weight of 67, 200Ibs and a tare weight of 2,170 kg. Nonetheless, a 40 ft container usually possesses a maximum gross weight of 67,200Ibs and a tare weight of 3,750 kg.

Thus, it’s advisable to choose a shipping container whose capacity is sufficient for the quantity of your goods.

How Long Does It Take for Iran Customs Service to Clear a Cargo?

The Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) is the governmental organization that is responsible for the clearance of goods in Iran.  Depending on the quantity and type of goods, goods are cleared by the IRICA within a few weeks. A larger amount of goods and permitted restricted goods usually take a longer clearance duration.

However, as of February 15, 2021, it was reported in the Tehran Times, that the IRICA is set to accelerate its customs clearance process by approving six new directives.
