The documents required must be filed with the Ministry of Industrial and Commercial Development and Private Sector Promotion. The documents are:

● Commercial invoice. Four copies must be made and should preferably be in French.
● Certificate of Origin. Two copies preferably in French.
● Packing list. This should include the number and quantity per carton and be in numeric series.
● Bill of lading.

For specific items, two other documents are required. A Halal certificate, which states that frozen or fresh meat came from an animal that was slaughtered according to Islamic law must accompany the meat. Another additional document is a special permit for the import of pharmaceuticals.

The general answer is yes, shipping containers are properly ventilated and watertight. However, ventilation might vary from container to container as some are designed to carry livestock and plants while others are just general-purpose containers. It is advisable to inspect the container to see if its ventilation is optimal. All modern containers are water-tight with seals blocking the influx of water. This is important to protect the contents of the container from water as it is transported by sea. However, as a container ages, it begins to lose some of its seals. This makes inspection important for used shipping containers.

Ideally, it should take less than a week for cargo to clear customs at the port. The reality is quite different. Depending on the item being imported and the accuracy of documentation, cargo can spend weeks at the port. Sometimes, political factors and security challenges can affect the clearance time of cargo in the country. This makes calculating the time for clearance of items quite difficult.

It is good if you are present to inspect the condition of the container you ordered and see if it meets your requirements. Delivering the container might also come with space challenges that will require you to make more room for the container.
