How Much Does It Cost To Ship A Container To Cambodia?

Cambodia Container Shipping Cost

The cost of moving a container overseas differs widely. Different factors, like destination and shipping services, will determine the overall price.

If you want to know the cost of shipping a container to Cambodia, we can help you.

Three Movers is a shipping company that services Cambodia. If you’re shipping valuable items to this country, here’s what you need to know.

How much does it cost to ship a container to Cambodia?

Various factors, such as container size, destination, and shipment mode, affect the cost of transporting a full container to a different country. To help you plan and budget for your overseas shipping costs, we’ll go through each factor in depth below.

  • The volume or weight of your items – The cost of shipping by sea freight is determined by the dimensions of your shipment. The weight of your cargo, on the other hand, is the main factor in calculating the cost of an air freight shipment.
  • Transport mode – The mode of transport will have a major effect on the shipping cost. Air freight is usually more expensive and quicker than sea freight. So, unless you’re delivering time-sensitive products, transport by sea is the best option. When compared to air freight, sea freight is typically five times less expensive.
  • Distance: Shipping charges are also calculated based on the item’s point of origin to its destination. If the distance is too far, then the delivery charge will be more expensive.
  • Destination port – Expect to pay import taxes and service costs at the destination port. The fees may vary by country, so the overall cost will also depend on the end destination of your shipping container.
  • Time of the year: Just like any other industry, international shipping has peak seasons. The peak seasons are during the summer and after the Chinese New Year. Shipping prices will be higher than usual during these times.

Other factors to consider when shipping commercial or personal items:

  • Insurance
  • Packing
  • Taxes and Custom fees
  • Inspections
  • General Rate Increase
  • Storage

In Cambodia, the peak season for international shipping occurs from November to April. Many tourists visit the country because these are the ideal months to explore and enjoy a getaway on the southern coast.

You can still ship your items during the peak season because there are three major international ports in Cambodia. There’s a low chance that your package will get stuck at a port for weeks.

Which Size of Shipping Container Works Best for Me?

For residential or commercial shipping, you can choose between the 20ft or 40ft container.

You can pack the content of a three-bedroom house inside a 20-foot container. It’s 33 cubic meters in size (cbm). However, the usable area is usually just around 25-28cbm.

The 40-foot container, on the other hand, has a total capacity of 67cbm, but only 54-58cbm is available for use. 40-foot containers are the best option if you have a lot of items to ship. It’s the right choice if you’re packing for houses with four (or more) bedrooms.

When moving your belongings, you don’t necessarily have to pay for the entire container. You can share the space of a single container with other people. This shipping method is called LCL or less container load.

LCL is usually enough for moving the contents of a one-bedroom flat. If you have lots of items to ship, then FCL (Full Container Load) or sole-use cargo is the ideal shipping method for you.

To transport all of your items together, you would typically pay for a whole container. This option is faster and safer because the container will only include your things.

Different Types of Freight Transportation

There are several ways to move a container overseas. Each of them has its own pricing, perks, and drawbacks.

  • Land transport: Land transport: This mode of transportation is often used in both domestic and international moves. It has the advantage of being both cheap and fast. This method, however, is limited to locations that can only be reached by road or track.
  • Air freight: This is not a popular choice for shipping a container internationally because it’s expensive. But despite the cost, air freight has the advantage of being incredibly fast and efficient. If you’re only exporting a few boxes at a time, it might be a good option. You can ship your container to Cambodia by air freight. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on shipping, though, go with sea freight.
  • Sea freight: This method is the most cost-effective but time-consuming way of international shipping. Depending on the route and destination, ocean freight shipping might take from a few days to several weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Kind of Taxes, Duties, and/or Fees Do I Have to Pay When Shipping to Cambodia?

The country has three types of tariffs for imported goods:

1. Custom import duties based on an ad-valorem rate
2. Special tax for certain goods like certain alcoholic beverages
3. A value-added tax. It is a flat 10% rate for most items. Certain items are exempt when they are from the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA).

Which Documents Are Necessary When Shipping to Cambodia?

When shipping to the country, having the right documents can be the determining factor of the time it will take for your shipment to be cleared by the customs officers. The documents that you need for shipping to Cambodia are:

● Bill of lading
● Customs import declaration
● Packing list
● Import permit
● Insurance certificate
● Tax certificate
● Certificate of origin.

What Types of Goods Am I NOT Allowed to Ship to Cambodia?

Some things aren’t allowed into the country and are controlled. If you have to ship any of these items into the country, a special permit will be necessary. These items are narcotics, psychotropic substances and their precursors, toxic wastes including radioactive waste, chemical substances, poisonous substances, certain pesticides, used computers and their spare parts, and household wastes. Due to the spread of avian influenza, Cambodia has tightened restrictions on poultry products.

What Happens If I Lose the Bill of Lading?

If you lose your bill of lading, you cannot get a new one until certain requirements are made and these requirements might take time. So, if you have been given your bill of lading, keep it safe, especially when it is the original copy. If, however, the document gets missing or destroyed, there are steps to take. A letter has to be prepared by the shipper stating in detail that the bill of lading is missing. The shipper will also have to prepare a letter of indemnity absolving the carrier from liability. A bank guarantee should be prepared to ensure that the carrier isn’t liable for shipping cargo without a bill of lading. Finally, a court document might be required to assist the letter of indemnity.

Are Shipping Containers Waterproof and Properly Ventilated?

Most shipping containers are watertight not waterproof. This means that most shipping containers are coated with sealing substances that keep water out of the inner space of the containers. This is important because containers are primarily shipped by sea and are loaded on the haul of the carrier. This exposes them to the elements at sea and if they aren’t watertight, the contents might be affected by water and salt. There are fully sealed containers that don’t have any type of ventilation and there are also shipping containers that are properly ventilated. They are ventilated so livestock and items that require aeration, can be transported safely.

How Important Is It to Get Insurance for My Cargo?

It is very important that you get insurance for your cargo. Even though the process of shipping has been improved over the years, things can still go wrong especially when you factor in the distance the cargo travels. Insurance will protect you from taking liability for loss, damage, or abandonment of your cargo. It might be an additional cost but, it is worth the peace of mind it brings.

How Long Does It Take for Cargo to Clear Customs on Cambodia?

Clearing of cargo at customs depends on a lot of factors including traffic at the port, the type of cargo, the accuracy of documentation, and the presence of holidays. On average, it takes 3 days for cargo to be cleared, however, if express clearing is paid for, it can take a day to a day and a half. Still, certain issues can extend clearance times to a week or more. Necessary documents must be properly prepared and available to facilitate the clearance of cargo.

Why Do FCL and LCL Shipments Have Different Transit Times?

FCL and LCL have different shipment times because the core nature of both is different. FCL is a shipment load that belongs to one client and that makes documentation straightforward. The destination is also a single destination. LCL on the other hand has different clients’ items in a single container. Each item has its own bill of lading and documentation which will add to the clearance time and then the items are heading to different destinations which adds to the transportation time. This makes transit times for FCL shorter than LCL.

Can I Track My Container While It Is in Transit?

Yes, you can track your container while it is in transit. The availability of the service depends on the shipping company used. All shipping companies offer some form of tracking for a fee. Tracking can be elaborate or very minimal. However, they all usually inform the client of the cargo’s arrival at the destination port.

Customer Reviews

I want to take a moment to say thank you to the extremely hard working crew that handled my move. I admit I was skeptical of hiring a company to move my household stuff but I was so pleased with the services. These guys packed everything up and had it loaded and delivered in no time at all. Everything was taken care of from start to finish and my wife and I were able to take some much needed time to check out the new town without having to worry about getting things unpacked. Three Movers took care of everything and we really appreciate it!
