Movers Finland To Germany

Finland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, with vast boreal forests and archipelagos. Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe and is a center for banking and commerce nestled in the shadows of the Alps. These two countries have a lot of differences but share a close relationship through their affiliation with the European Union. For this reason, even though the languages spoken in these countries are different, there are a lot of shared values.

One of the characteristics shared by these countries is the use of the Euro. This currency, shared by 19 countries throughout Europe, simplifies many of the aspects of relocation, from taxation to fees. As international moves go, moving from Finland to Germany is relatively simple. If you’d like help, an overseas moving company will give you the best possible experience. This guide will give you the basics.

Cost to Move from Finland to Germany

International moving from Finland to Germany is usually done by shipping container, carried over land or by sea freight using Europe’s extensive shipping networks. On average, shipping costs of a full-container load over land from Finland to Germany is between €3,400 - €4,700 and your shipment will arrive in 3-5 days. Half-container loads can be shipped for a few hundred less. With sea transport, the expense will be much more, as much as €5,300 - €7,300, and the trip will take more than 3 weeks. Some fragile items and antiques can be moved using air freight.

Importing Household Goods to Germany

First things first. As a citizen of Finland, an EU member country, you don’t need a residence permit to move to Germany. You can actually freely move in and out of Finland and Germany without the need for a visa.

The next most important information to obtain is how much you will owe for customs duty and taxes. Fortunately, when you import your household goods from Finland to Germany, they can be brought into the country without customs duty or taxes.

That’s not to say that you don’t have to go through customs clearance or register with the German government. Within two weeks of your arrival, you will have some minor housekeeping items to tend to. You must register with the local police, or Bürgeramt or visit your local residency office to apply for your official certificate of registration (Meldebestätigung).

You must present the following documents to obtain your certificate of registration:

  • Valid EU passport or national identity card
  • A completed registration form (Anmeldeformular)
  • A copy of the lease or rental agreement (Mietvertrag) as proof of residence in Germany

Importing a Vehicle to Germany

At least in the short term, importing a vehicle to Germany from Finland can be as simple as driving it across the border. Due to the two countries’ special EU affiliation, no taxes or special paperwork are needed for stays under six months. However, if you plan to stay longer, you must officially register your vehicle in Germany and pay any applicable road taxes.
