Moving Companies England To Germany
You may not have heard, given everything else going on in the world, but England and Germany’s divorce (aka Brexit) was just finalized on January 1, 2021. As of that date, the United Kingdom, which includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, was no longer part of the European Union. As a member of the European Union, England enjoyed freedom of movement and trade with fellow EU member countries. England also benefited from having a stronger negotiating position as part of the European Union’s economic bloc.
Now things have changed. The United Kingdom now stands alone, making a passport necessary for British citizens to travel anywhere outside of their borders, and in some cases, a visa. Does it mean that international removals from England to Germany is now impossible? No, but it will be harder than it used to be.
Importing Household Goods to Germany
When your cousin moved to Germany from England, it seemed easy. However, you can’t really count on their advice anymore. The rules have changed. You will need a visa and your passport if you plan to stay longer than six months, and whether you are using air freight or sea freight, customs declarations will require exhaustive (exhausting?) paperwork.
You’re probably wondering about taxes or customs duty, as well. Here we have good news, since you can import your goods to Germany free of custom and border taxes. You will need to provide documentation to support:
- Official termination of your residence abroad (This proof could be in the form of a lease termination, documentation from the sale of your home in England, or a letter from your employer.)
- Proof of new residence in Germany (This proof could be in the form of a lease agreement on German property, Einwohnermeldeamt (German police registration), or a letter from your employer in Germany.)
- Proof of residency in England for at least 12 months (By way of a signed lease agreement or proof of homeownership in Germany.)
Importing Motor Vehicles to Germany
When you meet the requirements for tax-free import of household goods, you can also import your vehicle tax-free. Your vehicle will be subject to inspection to determine roadworthiness and adherence to safety standards regarding headlights, emissions, brakes, and tires. Contact your local Kfz-Zulassungsstelle (German motor vehicle registration office) or any one with local knowledge on how it works to learn more. Betterstill, talk an international removals company with experience in vehicle importation to Germany.
Whether you drive your vehicle to Germany or have it shipped, once your vehicle has safely arrived in Germany, you will need to register it. Here are the documents you will need to provide:
- Valid Passport or Other ID
- Proof of Vehicle Ownership (free of liens or encumbrances)
- Proof of Address in Germany
- Customs Clearance
- Export Permit
- Vehicle Registration from England
- Insurance Card
- Proof of Roadworthiness and Emissions Testing
- Certification from the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registry proving that the vehicle has not previously been registered in Germany
