  • Post Office – changing your address with the post office will ensure that your mail, bills, and packages arrive to the correct place. You can easily update your address online with the official USPS website or by visiting your local post office.
  • Bank and Credit Card Companies – contact your bank and any of the companies that you have credit cards with to notify them of your change of address. Most will allow you to update this information easily online.
  • Social Security Service – this is only important if you currently receive social security benefits from the SSA. You can update your address with them online as well.
  • Magazine and any other subscriptions – whether it’s a monthly subscription box filled with treats for your dogs or your favorite magazine, you don’t want any of your monthly goodies arriving to the wrong address.
  • Tax Agency – when tax season rolls around, you’ll want to make sure that they have the correct address on file. Change your address with your local state tax agency by filling out the IRS online form.
  • Online shopping retailers – this is often overlooked but if you don’t update your shipping address on various shopping websites, you risk your items becoming lost or having to wait a long time to receive them.
  • Utilities, internet, cable, and phone – make sure that you notify that your services need to be switched over with your gas/electric company and your internet/cable provider. You wouldn’t want to risk unpacking in the dark, cold, or having no source of entertainment when you arrive.
  1. Register your car.

If you’re relocating to an entirely different state, make sure that you verify the license plate and driver’s license rules. Each state has different requirements and while some may require you to get a new license and register your car, others may not have as strict of policies. Check your particular state’s requirements when you arrive just to be sure.

  1. Find a new doctor and vet.

Checking this off your personal moving plan list early makes it much easier when the time rolls around that you need a physician. Avoid waiting until you actually need it, as it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Find a new doctor for you and your family, and be sure to transfer all your medical records over.
