Cost of Moving Companies Canada to Europe

International Moving costs, cost of movers Canada to Europe

Most shipping to Europe from Canada happens by way of shipping container through sea freight. For household goods, you can choose between a full container (FCL) or a half container (LCL). In terms of space, a full container is roughly 12 meters long and should be sufficient to pack  a 2-bedroom home.

The average cost to ship from Canada to Europe depends on where you are going. Shipping a full container to Italy, for example, will cost between $8,800 – $11,900, which is similar to the cost for moving to the Netherlands. Moving to the U.K., France, or Norway? You can expect to pay shipping costs between $9,000-$12,500.

The journey across the Atlantic will take between 3-6 weeks, a timeframe that is dependent on many external factors such as weather conditions, container availability, geopolitics, and more. That said, with a journey that long, you will certainly want to use extra care when packing your items for shipment.

International relocation is very different from a move across town. Each box must be carefully packed and inventoried in what may feel like excruciating detail. Serial numbers and purchase receipts can be very helpful with getting you through customs hassle-free, but the upfront work that goes into that is daunting.

What about Taxes and Customs Duty?

For the most part, your household goods can be imported to Europe without a need for customs duty or taxes, as long as you meet the basic requirements. These countries are going to want the items you bring with you to be items that you have owned and used personally in Canada for at least a year prior to your move. Most countries have restrictions on the import of goods such as firearms, alcohol, tobacco, and other sensitive items, so check with your local embassy for guidance. moving industry

Moving insurance costs

Moving internationally from Canada to Europe will require getting insurance coverage for your priced posession. Any item that is worth moving that long distance is not worth losing. Therefore, any additional amount you spend on insurance to ship household goods overseas will be worth it, in the case of any eventuality. The cost of moving insurance depends on the the value of items you are moving and whether you prefer a basic insurance coverage or comprehensive insurance policy. You should be looking at a spending range of $100 – $1000 for insurance depending of items value and policy preference. Most international movers provide basic coverage, if you need a premium package, you may contact your trusted insurance company.

Additional Moving Services Cost

You may require additional services when moving such as professional packing, provision of packing materials, temporary storage, and more. Most international moving companies provide these services at added costs so let them know the services you will be requiring in advance so they can include them in the estimate. These shouldn’t cost you more than a few hundred dollars.

Port to Port or Door to Door Service?

There are three legs to moving abroad with your goods. The journey from your home to the port, port to port, and port of destination country to your new home. Most shipping companies can provide either of the two services. Moving your items from door to door will be more convenient for you, however, it costs more than moving the items from port to port.

What can I bring?

Aside from restricted items such as those referenced above, you are welcome to bring your household goods and personal items to your new country in Europe when you move. However, you may wish to reconsider bringing any of your electronics with you. Canadian power outlets are different in design and voltage, so even if you could plug your hairdryer into a European outlet, the difference in voltage could start a fire. This goes for all electronics, so you’ll want to plan ahead if you intend to charge your phone or any other personal electronics while you are in Europe.

What about my vehicle?

Vehicle imports from North America can be especially challenging. It’s not because it’s hard to put these vehicles in a container and ship them – that part’s pretty easy. North American vehicles are built to different technical standards. They are manufactured to be driven on the right-hand side of the roadway, when in Europe cars are driven on the left-hand side of the roadway.

It can be pretty tempting to try to import your vehicle from Canada. In North America, cars are viewed differently, and people purchase them for their size, power, and utility. The truth is, in Europe, you would really never see a full-size SUV like the Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe. Europeans prefer vehicles with better fuel economy and a smaller footprint, making them a better fit for Europe’s narrow roads and crowded cities.

In addition, vehicles imported to Europe from North America must undergo extensive technical modifications to make them roadworthy. Homologation, as it is called, is the process by which vehicles are made to comply with European vehicle standards. The results, while effective, can be unsightly at best.

Customer Reviews

I hired Three Movers to help me move to a new office a few miles away from my old location. While it was a very short distance, there were so many things that needed to be taken care of as we have a few computers, printers and other office equipment that needed to be handled with care. The men that showed up to assess the office were really friendly and on moving day, they had everything carefully packaged up and moved far quicker than I expected. This really helped me because I was able to re-open several days sooner than I had anticipated. That was really beneficial to my business and I appreciate the efficient work that was done. Thanks so much for the help with my move and I will definitely be referring you all to any friends or family that need a dependable moving company!
