Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my move is considered local or long-distance in Alabama?
In general, if the distance between the old and new location is less than 100 miles, it is considered a local move. Relocations that are more than 100 miles are considered long-distance moves. Also, in the state of Alabama, any move that crosses over to another police jurisdiction can be considered as a long-distance move.
How far in advance should I start planning my move?
For local moves, advance notice of at least two weeks is recommended. If you are moving out of state or out of the country, you must inform your moving company 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Although many companies can accommodate last-minute bookings, you should contact your moving company as soon as possible so you can book the day and time of your choice and everything will go smoothly from start to finish.
Is it possible to get a moving estimate during the initial consultation call?
It is possible, although many moving companies would call this a non-binding estimate or an estimate that may change in value. During the initial consultation call, we ask our customers questions about their move, such as the distance and the number of items needing transport. From this, we can estimate how many hours are required to complete the job and base the estimate on that.
Does this mean you don’t need to conduct a physical walkthrough of my place to get an estimate?
While some moves are cut and dried, others are more complex. In many cases, we can give an estimate based on our customer’s answers alone. We always recommend a physical walkthrough of the location to provide us with a clearer idea of the scope of the job. Customers can waive the inspection, but we don’t recommend it. Although we’ve gotten pretty accurate at estimating costs based on our experience, nothing beats a physical inspection when it comes to getting an accurate estimate.
What factors determine the total cost of my move?
The total cost of your move depends on whether the move is local or long-distance. It also depends on the number of belongings you have and items that need extra care. The cost will also depend on what services are included in the bill of lading. Some services are bundled together, while others come with an added fee, such as vehicle transport, packing services, and storage.
Are there instances where I have to pay more than what is written in the initial estimate?
If the customer waived the physical inspection and we found out that there are more items to be transported than initially agreed on, the move may take longer than expected. This means you have to pay our team for the extra hours if you’re on an hourly rate. A customer may also request more services on the moving date itself, which will incur additional charges.
How long does it take for you to clear out a house?
It depends on the number of belongings you have, the number of rooms in the house, and the services you asked for your upcoming move. If the items are packed and ready to go, clearing out an entire house will take less than an hour. However, if you requested complete moving services, the movers need to mark and pack your belongings before moving them into the truck. This can take around 1-2 hours, depending on how large your house is and if you have fragile items that require extra care.
I would like to keep my belongings in storage in the meantime. Is this possible?
Yes, we have safe storage facilities in Alabama where you can keep your items temporarily if you are still figuring things out. We also have storage facilities in other states, so you don’t have to worry about storing your items safely for interstate moves.
Do you offer free insurance?
We offer free insurance protection for all our customers. However, this free insurance may not cover 100% of your items during the move. If you want complete insurance protection, we offer full insurance protection, which comes as an added cost.
How do I prepare for a local move within the state?
It all depends on the services you requested. Basic truck rentals mean no moving team will be dispatched to help you move, so you need to ensure you have everything packed and ready before your moving date. You can ask for help from friends and family to help you pack and load the boxes into the truck. If you opted for stress free full service moving, you can just sit back and relax because our movers will take care of the move for you. You can segregate and mark your items beforehand to help movers determine which items should go into the truck and which ones should be thrown away.
Do I need to accompany you during the move?
Although it’s preferable to have the homeowner accompany the moving team to the new location, we realize that some customers might have a busy schedule. If you can’t accompany the movers to the new location, make sure someone is there to meet them.
Will you assign someone to manage or oversee my move?
Each move has its own moving manager. This is usually the person you speak to during the initial consultation. The moving manager is responsible for giving you a quote and taking inventory of all your belongings. They will also help you prepare, from determining the best route to your new destination to providing you with the Certification of Insurance and other documents needed for the move.
What happens if there are delays in the move?
It depends on who is responsible for the delay. For example, if the delay was caused by our truck getting pulled over for a traffic violation, the customer doesn’t have to pay extra hourly rates, and we will take care of any tickets. However, if delays were caused by the negligence of the customer, such as failure to secure parking permits, the customer may be charged extra for delays.
