Moving For A Job – What To Ask Yourself Before You Move

Moving For A Job – What To Ask Yourself Before You Move

Moving for a job is one of the most common reasons for moving. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 19.4% of people move for job-related reasons. But if you’re lucky enough to get an attractive job offer from an employer in another city or another state, there are a few things to consider before you make your move.

  1. Is The Job A Good Fit For Me?

Chances are that if you’re thinking about moving for a job, the salary and benefits you’ve been offered are very appealing. But that's not all you should consider.

First, ask yourself the basics. Is the job a good fit? Would you feel fulfilled and happy in your new role? Are you qualified for it, and confident that you will do well in the position?

Do some research and soul-searching to determine the answers to these questions. Learn more about the role, corporate culture, and everything else you can find out about the company to determine if it’s a good fit.

  1. What Benefits Do I Get If I Relocate?

Make sure you double-check the benefits and relocation package you’ll get when moving for a job. Each employer is different, but relocation packages may include:

  • Moving expenses
  • Temporary housing
  • Cost of house-hunting or apartment-hunting tris
  • Transportation (by car, plane, etc.)
  • Home sale or lease-breaking assistance
  • Miscellaneous expenses (meals during the trip to your new home, etc.)

Consider how much all of these benefits are worth along with your expected new salary and other benefits to ensure that moving makes financial sense.

  1. Are There Other Jobs Available In The Area?

While you shouldn’t expect that your new job won’t work out, it pays to consider whether or not there are other opportunities for you in the area – you definitely want a “safety net” in case things don’t go to plan. If there are no other opportunities that appeal to you in the area, this may be a cause for concern.

  1. How Much Is The Cost Of Living?

We recommend using a tool like a cost of living calculator to determine how much your expenses will be in your new area.

You may find that, despite a large salary increase, your actual purchasing power may remain the same. This is common if you’re moving from a low cost of living (LCOL) area like the American Midwest to a high cost of living (HCOL) area like a city in California or New York.
