Movers UK to Italy

International Moving Companies United Kingdom to Italy

Moving internationally to Italy is pretty convenient by sea. With over 7,500 km of coastline, Italy is home to several major international shipping ports, including those in Genoa, Napoli, and Cagliari. The Port of La Spezia is the one most commonly used for container shipping and offers convenient access to European rail. The cost to ship a full container to Italy from the U.K. will be around £4,600 - £6,200. The one disadvantage to ship household goods to Italy is that it can take up to a month for your items to arrive.

Over land is also an acceptable choice for shipping household goods or vehicles. It is cheaper than sea freight, at a cost of £2,800 - £3,800 and will take between 2 to 4 days.

Moving your Household Goods to Italy

If there is one thing you should know about Italian customs, it is that the process may differ from individual to individual. Some countries are known for their rigorous and ruthlessly consistent handling of your imports, but Italy is not one of them. Some people make it through the moving process without any problems, while others get caught up trying to locate obscure paperwork.

Fortunately, as long as you have owned the imported goods for at least a year prior to your move, you are welcome to import your household goods to Italy free of taxes and duty and save money. You must also have been a resident of the U.K. for at least a year.

The Paperwork

There is a fair amount of paperwork involved with an international move. Since your tax-free imports depend on how long you have owned your belongings, do your best to collect receipts for all household items you bring with you. Any items for which you cannot provide this documentation may be subject to additional taxes.

Italian customs officials are going to want to see:

  • Proof of your previous address, which must also be where your items are shipping from. You must be able to show that you have resided in the U.K. for at least the previous 366 days.
  • Your U.K. passport
  • Italian tax registration form
  • Anti-mold declaration from the USMAF
  • Written declaration that your shipment does not include forbidden items
  • Written declaration regarding your new address in Italy and the value of your imported goods.

Easy enough, right? Well, here’s the kicker: Italian customs officials would really prefer to have these documents in Italian. Remember how we said that the Italian customs experience can differ from person to person. Here is your chance to “make friends” by providing them the documents they need in the language they understand.

Importing your vehicle to Italy

It’s possible to qualify for tax and duty-free import of your vehicle if you meet the following criteria:

  • It must be your personal vehicle, that you have owned and used in the U.K. for at least six months.
  • The vehicle must meet EU technical standards (For the most part, this should not be a concern, given how recently the U.K. has left the European Union. This could certainly change in the years to come.)

Once imported tax and duty-free, you cannot dispose of the vehicle in any manner for at least a year. This means you can’t give it away, rent it, sell it, lease it, or abandon it. Failure to comply with this rule will cause you to owe retroactive taxes and potentially, other penalties.

What Paperwork Will You Need?

  • Proof of your previous address, which must also be where your items are shipping from. You must be able to show that you have resided in the U.K. for at least the previous 366 days.
  • Your U.K. passport
  • Italian tax registration form
  • Bill of Lading
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Title and Registration for your vehicle from the U.K.
  • Technical Data Sheet to prove that your vehicle meets EU technical standards
