Across USA Moving Reviews

Cross USA Movers Reviews

While most national moving companies in the USA are reputable establishments, there are some lingering bad apples in the industry. With these shady moving services comes a slew of cautionary tales from those who’ve worked with them. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there have been a large number of complaints in recent years filed against “rogue” movers for “fraudulent practices.”

However, you shouldn’t let possible moving scams spoil your next relocation. At Three Movers, we are here to set the record straight and help you identify a legitimate moving company. After all, moving day is stressful enough without placing your precious belongings in the hands of unqualified, scam artists. From moving reviews and complaints, to insurance, licenses and the way they conduct business, there are a number of ways that you can determine the credibility of a moving company before you even get them on the phone.

We’ve outlined just exactly how you can know if the company you are choosing for your next across USA moving experience is right for you.

Licenses and Insurance

One of the first things you should do before hiring a moving company is to verify that they are properly licensed and insured. Fortunately, this is something that you do not have to worry about when you partner with Three Movers.

With that said, it’s important to note that although long distance interstate movers, or movers that perform “across USA” moving jobs, are required to register with the Federal government and can be found in the Department of Transportation (DOT) system, local movers are only controlled by the particular state they operate in. Since each state has different licensing regulations, it’s highly advisable that you read up on the requirements in your state to ensure that the moving company you choose is legitimate.

According to the FMCSA, interstate moving companies are legally required to offer two types of options in regards to liability: Released Value Protection and Full Value Protection. These are defined as follows:

  • Released Value Protection: This is the most economical option, as it is offered at no additional charge to the customer. The protection it offers is minimal, meaning the mover only assumes liability for 60 cents per pound per article.
  • Full Value Protection: With this option, the mover assumes liability for the replacement value of any goods that are lost or damaged in your shipment. This is the most comprehensive plan available to protect your belongings and the price varies from mover to mover.

In addition to providing you with liability options, your moving company must have their own insurance. Upon request, they should also be able to give you proof of said insurance.

Moving Reviews

When it comes to finding a reputable moving company, looking at their reviews is a great place to start. Hearing first-hand experiences from past customers is one of the best ways to learn about whether or not a company is right for you. Check the reviews listed on their website, in addition to third party services such as Yelp, Trustpilot, and even the FMCSA’s search engine. By obtaining the moving company’s DOT number, you can find any official complaints that were filed against them.

family owned

It’s also recommended to ask around – ask your neighbors, family, and a few friends for recommendations. They can provide you with their own personal experiences with moving companies they’ve worked with before. Alternatively, you can check Nextdoor.com, a social networking sit for your community that’ll allow you to ask your neighbors for suggestions.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is another great place to verify if the moving company is legitimate. The BBB is a non-profit organization that’s dedicated to helping people find trustworthy companies. When a company receives accreditation from the BBB, this means they adhere to the organization’s strict standards.

The Estimate Process

Before giving you a moving quote, a reputable moving company should perform an in-person survey or at least a virtual inspection of your belongings. If the company doesn’t physically see your things, you could end up with a bill that far exceeds what you originally expected based on the original quote. Quotes that are issued over the phone or internet, using your own account of your household items, are generally a red flag. This is a strong indication of a possible moving scam.

As a general rule of thumb, companies that offer you a firm quote without surveying your things usually cannot be trusted. With that said, to ensure that you receive the best deal from your moving company, it’s advisable that you collect at least three or four quotes from different companies. This allows you to make a proper comparison.

Once the inspection is complete, the moving company will issue you an estimate in writing. That way, you’ll be able to successfully avoid any undesirable surprises down the line. If one movers’ estimate is considerably less or more expensive than the others, this is another red flag.

Professionalism

How does the moving company you are considering hiring conduct business? More specifically, what is their online presence like and are they even online? If you cannot find a website or virtually any mention of these movers online, consider it a major red flag and a potential moving scam. For example, if salespeople showed up at your home with no identification or uniforms, this is another red flag. This same rule can be applied to your moving day. If the shuttle truck pulled up to your apartment without logos or the moving company name anywhere in sight, this is highly suspicious.

Aside from just insurance and licenses, consumers should use common sense when looking for a reputable moving company. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for whether or not the movers are professionals. Do they have a physical office and business email address? Have they given you a Bill of Lading? Is their initial quote too good to be true? If, in your gut, something is telling you that you’re walking into a scam, listen.

Another thing to keep in mind is if the company requires a deposit. If the movers ask for a deposit that is more than 20 percent of your quote, choose a different moving company. Most trustworthy companies will only require payments once your belongings have been delivered.

Customer Service

An across U.S.A moving storage company will take customer service seriously. They will have a standby customer service team that is available to receive and resolve customer complaints professionally. For national moving companies, there should be a local customer service manager. When you are dealing with a company that you can't easily speak to a customer service rep, then something might be fishy.
