Who You Should Contact When Your Address Changes?
Published by Chris Townsend
Any time you move, you’re going to have a lot of plates spinning in the air. You’ve got to plan everything from finalizing your new place of residence to packing and hiring movers, to setting up everything you need to operate in your day-to-day life. What often gets lost in the wash during this process is changing your address with all the appropriate businesses, institutions, organizations, and personal and professional contacts. To help cover your bases when your location changes, here is a list of who you’ll want to contact.
Postal Service
The first and most important address change you submit should be to the postal service. Obviously, you want your mail routed to the proper location, but it also covers your bases should you forget to register the change anywhere else. Mail forwarding due to a change of residence lasts for one year and you can extend that period even longer if need be. Remember that you’ll want to put in your change of site a week or two ahead of time to sync it up with your moving date.
Utilities
Utilities are a necessity when you move so you’ll want to make arrangements in advance for that, too. Electric company, internet and cable provider, phone company, trash and recycling, home security companies, and any other service you pay for on a monthly basis should be contacted. Just be sure to give them enough lead time to set everything up and that you’ll have to be physically present for things like internet and security setup.
Employers
Your employer or clients should also be informed when you move since they will need to send you communications, insurance updates, pay stubs, and tax documents.

Professional Organizations
Any organizations you’re a member of will also need to be updated when your address changes. This holds especially true if you have a professional license of any sort and there is a state or federal body that oversees and regulates licensing. They typically want to be informed within 30 days of moving.
Insurance Carriers & Loan Providers
If you carry assurance with anyone, they’ll need to be notified too. This includes car coverage, renters’ security, homeowners’ insurance, and anyone else that provides a plan for you. Likewise, if you have any loans or debtors that you’re working with, they will want to know when you change your primary residence.
Motor Vehicle Department
Your driver’s license should have your current location on it, which means you’ll want to contact your local motor vehicle department when your address changes as well. This is another one that needs to be taken care of sooner rather than later and in most states requires the payment of a small fee.
Financial Institutions & Credit Cards
Just as you should contact anyone you have a loan with, you’ll also want to notify your bank and any companies you have a credit card with upon moving. Don’t forget to order new checks that reflect your current address!
Friends & Family
Last but not least, your friends and family will want to know your current address. You can send out a simple form letter to let them know, or better yet, if you’re having a housewarming, the invitation can serve as both an opportunity to see your new home and let them know you’ve moved.
