The Top Interior Design Styles
Published by Chris Townsend
There are tons of interior design styles to choose from and determining which ones are the best is largely a matter of test. If you read five articles online about the best interior design styles, you’ll likely find five different lists, although there will definitely be some overlap. In thinking about which styles to include on this list, we tried to pull from a wide variety of sources and go with what are generally considered to be the most popular choices for decorating your home’s interior.
Midcentury
The Midcentury design style, and its close relative Midcentury Modern, are among the most popular currently going and have been for a while. Hearkening back to the chic stylings of the 50s and 60s, mixing in some elements of industrial design, such as wood and metal, combined with sleeker shapes of other styles. The result is a style that is constantly evolving and drawing from other styles mentioned here, allowing for a versatility to flash some personal preference along with stylish pieces.
Bohemian
If you like an eclectic look that shouts “comfort” with a healthy dash of color and modern mixed with vintage, the Bohemian or BoHo styles might be for you. Bohemian interior décor allows for a lot of mixing and matching, styles from different parts of the world, and a focus on natural materials and comfortable fabrics. Like the Mediterranean style, a healthy dose of plants more than fits with this style too, and so does pretty much anything else as long as it fits together to make the space comfortable for you.

Minimalist
Minimalist design is partially what it sounds like, but not entirely. While a minimalist style will typically have less fluff and knick-knacks than others, that doesn’t mean it’s without some personality. What minimalism strives to do is create more space around functional furniture and décor pieces to emphasize the space, without the overcrowded feel that can result from some of the other stylistic choices. For some, this approach is seen as too clean or sterile to be inviting, but it’s also a modern and sleek look that does appeal to many and lends itself nicely to geometric patterns and shapes.
Industrial
A design style that emphasizes functionality, industrial design is all about open space that doesn’t attempt to hide the bones of a home or loft. You’ll see a lot of exposed steel and wood, much like you might in the industrial style, but also with brick and concrete, making it more of a “masculine” style that was common in many of the converted lofts made from old factory buildings. It’s since become a popular style for hip coffee shops and boutiques as it offers up a lot of space and the exposed “bones” of the style create a dramatic effect that is all its own.
Mediterranean
The Mediterranean climate is one in which almost any type of plant can thrive, and the interior design style is no different. If you want plants heavily involved in your home décor, you’ll probably lean toward either the Mediterranean or Bohemian styles. The difference being that the Mediterranean style feels more like a beachside bungalow with more tile or mosaic involved. Both play heavily on playful colors that create a vibrant and relaxing mood, as well as natural materials with the Mediterranean style perhaps including more natural light in most cases.
