Should You Tip Piano Movers?
Published by Chris Townsend
service charge can be tricky with certain solutions, especially when the cost of the facility is fairly high to begin. As an inclusive moving company, we often get questions about whether or not customers should tip their movers. There is no clear-cut rule of thumb or answer to the question, but there are a lot of different perspectives out there depending on who you talk to. The question can be even more difficult to grapple with when you’re paying for a very specific assistances that requires some delicacy and expertise, such as shifting a piano. It’s also a very popular topic you’ll find on a lot of forums and message boards about pianos and organs, so we’ve decided to lay out an answer for people that makes sense. As a company that is working within the industry, here is our take on the question of “Should you tip piano haulers?”.
The simplest answer to whether you should tip shifters of any kind is this: it’s not expected, but it is appreciated. With that said, a lot of our customers do service charge our drivers and movers, especially those that request specialized solutions like hot tub, safe, or piano moving. Ultimately, it’s up to you if you want to bonus or not and we definitely understand that you’re already paying a decent chunk of change for hauling facilities to begin with.

If you Choosing to Leave a Tip
As we mentioned above, any tip is always appreciated, but if you’re wondering how much to bonus, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine what amount is appropriate. Of the customers who do reward our workers, the majority of them service charge between 10 to 20 percent of the total cost of the move, but even that depends on the size and the scope of the shift. Customers who only need moving help to relocate across town will often compensation a flat amount rather than a percentage, usually based on the amount of time it takes. $20 to $40 per carriers is fairly normal in a lot of cases when the relocate doesn’t take more than a couple hours. It’s the larger and longer moves that most often see a reward that involves a percentage of the total cost—a number that is fine to split between the entire relocating crew. For example, if the total cost of moving a piano to another city is $1,000, then a tip of 10% to 20% is more than generous and would mean that $100 to $200 is split among the shifting crew.
Other Considerations
One thing outside of tipping that is greatly appreciated is you have some bottled water for the carriers. Obviously, moving can be pretty tough work and having a cold bottle of water is really helpful, especially after loading or unloading something heavy like a piano or organ. Many of our shifters bring their own of course, but the gesture is always appreciated. If you really want to go above and beyond, you can offer the movers a portable snack when they’re done, which again is more of a generous touch than any sort of expectation.
