Here are a few things you will need to know to move to Shanghai.

Visa

You must have a visa to live in Shanghai. Depending on the reason you are making your move, you will need one of the following types of visas:

  • Study visa: for those enrolled in a Shanghai university. These are usually given for stays that will be six months or less but can also be extended for long term living.
  • Tourist: This is a short-term visa for those that plan to stay for a vacation time, and you will need proof of a hotel booking and bank statement showing you can afford to be in Shanghai during the time listed for the hotel stay.
  • Business visa: a work visa is issued for those that will be in Shanghai for employment. Each work visa is issued based on the dates that one will be conducting business in Shanghai.
  • Work visa: A work permit from a Shanghai based employer is required for a work visa. This visa will offer long-term living and will need to be accompanied by a residence permit and registration with the Shanghai police.

Auto Transport

Shanghai has a large public transit system that includes trains, subway, taxi cabs and bus lines but it is often preferable to have a personal car. A licensed auto transport company can manage international auto transport. You will usually need to provide your vehicle title, insurance, driver’s license, and the import tax fees to ship a personal car overseas.

Household Moving

Container shipping is the preferred method of shipping household goods internationally to Shanghai. The cost will vary depending on the container size as well as the property that will be declared upon entry to China.
