Preventive Pest Control For Your New Home
Published by Chris Townsend
Once you’ve moved into a new home and everything is organized, you can take a breath and start to get comfortable in your living space. Ideally, you won’t have to make any immediate repairs or have any problems to address, but one thing you should consider is preventive pest control. The last thing you want to deal with are some furry home invaders or creepy critters that make your house a less comfortable place to live, not to mention the damage they could potentially cause. To help keep your home free of unwanted pests and rodents, here are some tips you can implement to keep them out.
Keep Food Sealed & Stored
Food and crumbs are probably the number one cause of unwanted pests, especially mice. The best preventive measure you can take is to make sure all food is stored and sealed so that it’s not easily accessible. Chip clips or clothes pins work well to keep open bags secured and plastic containers are always great for things like sugar and flour.
Check Your Pipes
Standing water is another thing that tends to attract unwanted guests so it’s worth your time to check your home for any leaks or drips (which you’ve hopefully done before moving in). Check under sinks in the kitchen and bathroom too since water can easily accumulate there outside the view of your day-to-day use.

Keep It Clean
Just as it’s important to keep food containers and bags sealed up, it’s also important to keep counters and floors clean of crumbs and food particles. A once over with a damp rag will do the trick after you’ve prepared food to keep counters clean. Regularly vacuuming or sweeping of any areas you eat is also good for preventing the accumulation of any food that may make its way off the table.
Close Up Entry Points
Survey the exterior of your home to make sure there are no potential entry points for bugs or vermin. Even small cracks in your foundation or basement can be an inviting doorway for pests. A small bit of sealant or caulk can easily fix this possible problem, as well as help to keep your home properly insulated. If you do find any open spaces that are large enough for a rodent to enter, you can fill them with steel wool to keep mice out, or just cover them up completely with a small chunk of wood.
Learn Your Local Pests
Every area of the U.S. has its own specific pest concerns so you should familiarize yourself with the ones in your area. This resource provides a good overview of what pests you can expect in each state and some information about how to prevent them from invading. Once you know what pests you’re susceptible to, you can watch for the warning signs and nip any problems in the bud before they become a true nuisance.
