Both terms refer to the type of transport truck used when moving a vehicle. Enclosed shipping means that your car is moved in an enclosed truck that is specifically make to haul cars in the safest and most protected way possible. There is no possibility of damage from bad weather, rocks that may kick up during shipment, or any chance of access while your car sits on a truck overnight during longer trips. For this reason, most owners of high end or luxury cars prefer an enclosed carrier.

By contrast, an open carrier leaves the vehicle “exposed,” for lack of a better word. That doesn’t mean that your car will be dinged up, damaged, or broker into if you use an open carrier, but an open carrier doesn’t offer the security and protection of enclosed transport. In fact, these types of incidents are incredibly rare with open air car shipping. The benefit or an open carrier is that it is more affordable than using an enclosed carrier. Enclosed shipping is usually done with a smaller cargo area that hauls only one or two cars in most cases.
