Moving Case Study #1

This is the first in a series of case studies we’ve put together to help our readers better understand how we help our customers and provide creative solutions to help solve the problems they face when moving. In this case study, we examine some of the issues that arise for families when moving, as well as the steps we take to help them, including a specific example from a family that we helped with their moving needs.

Jeff and Suzanne's Move

Jeff and Suzanne contacted us in January, 2020 to inquire about the cost of moving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis after weighing their options. Their first inclination was to rent a truck and do the driving themselves, but they had second thoughts after comparing our prices with the cost and time investment of renting a moving truck. It may surprise some of our readers to learn that the cost of renting a truck can often times be comparable to that of hiring a moving company, especially in those instances when you’re dealing with a long distance or cross country move.

Challenges with Jeff and Suzanne's Move

Jeff and Suzanne’s move had some specific challenges that they were concerned about, which they voiced right up front when contacting us. As with any type of move, it’s always best to mention any potential issues or challenges that may crop up when you first contact a moving company so that they can best assess the price and provide an accurate price quote. For their family, one of the challenges was a relatively short lead up time to their moving date, which they mentioned had been a financial obstacle when contacting other movers. While it’s not unusual for moving companies to charge more for last minute moving requests, were happily able to offer our same low prices, even with just 10 days notice.

Problems with Larger Items

Another potential issue they mentioned is that their new home had a staircase with a tricky corner that would likely make it difficult to move larger items like their couch and entertainment center to the second level of their home. While it did some work to get their couch up to the second level, our experienced moving staff was able to safely get it situated around the stairway corners to the upstairs. As for the entertainment center, which was quite large, we had to take a different approach. Due to its size, it was not feasible to move it in one piece, but we were able to carefully disassemble the unit and take it up the stairs piecemeal, where we then reassembled it for them.

A similar approach had to be taken with an outdoor play set that their children used. They mentioned that they would be okay leaving it behind, we assured them that we would be able to take it apart and reassemble in their new (and much more spacious) backyard. Needless to say, their children, Taylor and Matt, were thrilled to be able to bring along the play set that had brought them so much joy in the early years of their life. Suzanne contacted us after they got settled in and mentioned that having their children’s play set went a long way toward helping them adjust to life in a new home and city. She also sent along a nice customer review of our services, which she allowed us to share on our website with her permission.

Here’s what Suzane M. had to say:

When my husband and I made the decision to move our family from Los Angeles to a Minneapolis, we had a lot on our plate. With two kids in school and both of us changing jobs, we were trying to find a way to move affordably while still having time to get settled into our new home. Our first instinct was to rent a moving truck and do the work ourselves, but it quickly became apparent that the amount of time we’d spend packing, driving, and moving furniture into our new home was not going to fit into our schedule.

Saving money was a priority for us, so we made the decision early on to rent a truck and move on our own, with the possibility of hiring some help to unload everything when we arrived. Little did we know, we were in for quite the sticker shock when he contacted U-Haul to rent a truck! It was going to cost nearly $4,000 just to rent the truck and make the drive ourselves, so we decided it was a good idea to look into some moving companies to see what they would charge. One thing we didn’t anticipate is the difference in prices between the movers we reached out to—in some cases thousands of dollars more for what was effectively the same job. A friend of ours recommended we contact Three Movers and boy were we glad we did!

Their estimate was one of the lower ones we came across and the final price was right in the range they gave us, which was a relief after some of the stories we’d heard about working with moving companies. With both of starting new jobs and the kids starting out at a new school, it ultimately made sense to hire Three Movers. Not only did they make the move much easier than it would have been, but hiring them also freed up the extra time we needed to get settled and organized into our new home. In the end, we were very happy that we hired them and would definitely recommend the company to any other families that are looking to save a few bucks when moving to a new city.
