How To Protect Your Mattress When Moving

How To Protect Your Mattress When Moving

A lot of the time when people move, they don’t give much thought to protecting their mattress. It’s easy enough to just slide into an available space in the moving truck, throw a blanket over it and assume everything will work out just fine. In many cases, this is true, but there is also the reality that different mattresses need to loaded differently and they’re actually one of the things that’s easiest to damage during a move. To help provide you with a better idea of how to protect your mattress during a move, we’ve put together this helpful list of tips and advice you can use.

Measure First

It’s important to take careful measurements of your mattress before moving, or even before deciding where it will go in your new home. Not only will you need measurements to ensure that it fits with everything else you hope to put in the bedroom, but you’ll also want to keep the dimensions in mind with respect to navigating doorways and stairs. Mattresses can be surprisingly heavy and are often difficult to maneuver in small spaces so knowing how much space will be needed can be very helpful.

Best way to protecting the mattress

Pack Carefully

Mattresses were not designed to be set on their sides, but it’s almost always how they’re packed in a moving truck, usually to save space. While this may be fine for certain types of mattresses, and for shorter moves, it’s not advisable in many cases. If you’re moving all the way across the country and your mattress will be in the truck for a week or longer, you may want to consider laying it flat and avoid stacking boxes on top of it. While this takes up more space in a moving truck, it will do a better job of protecting the mattress. This is especially true of memory foam mattresses that absorb the weight of the things resting on it. (A box spring can be placed on its side during a move without any problems unless otherwise specified).

Use A Mattress Bag

If you’re concerned about tears or damage to your bed, a mattress bag can prevent a lot of those problems. The main concern with most mattresses hauled in a moving truck is that something heavy with a sharp corner may cause a rip—something that a mattress bag can usually prevent. Make sure to check the dimensions of the bed so that you know you have the right sized mattress bag and select one that is made of heavy duty material to ensure that it arrives in good shape.

Consider about moving storage

Consider Storage

If you won’t be moving into your house right away and need to store larger furniture pieces like a mattress, storage can be a good option. The same applies to storing a mattress as it does to loading it onto a truck: you don’t want it left on its side for an extended period of time and nothing heavy should be placed on top of it. While some furniture items can be “stacked” to a certain extent, it’s not the best approach with a mattress since it can shift during moving, resulting in lumps that are difficult to get out. Mattresses are not cheap and it’s always a good idea to carefully protect anything you’ve invested in, especially when it’s something that you’ll be using on a daily basis.
