How to Pack Up a Bedroom
Whether you’re moving out of a dorm room, small apartment, or large estate, packing up a bedroom can be one of the most challenging parts of your relocation. Bedrooms tend to be one of the more disorderly areas of the home, collecting all the chaos, prized personal items, clothing, and clutter. There’s also everything from large furniture items to small, tedious possessions like linens and décor. As a result, it’s important that you try to stay as focused and organized as possible when it comes to packing up a bedroom.
Although packing a bedroom may seem like a daunting endeavor, there are strategies and supplies you can implement to help make your job easier. That way, you can also simplify the unpacking process and be able to locate everything when you arrive at your new home. Continue reading for our comprehensive guide on ‘How to Pack Up a Bedroom,’ in preparation for your next move!
Decluttering Your Bedroom
The first thing you should do when you need to pack up a bedroom is declutter the space. We frequently mention that moving is an excellent time to take stock of your belongings and purge anything you no longer use, need or want. This practice can be applied wonderfully when packing up a bedroom in your home. It will not only make packing and unpacking easier, it might actually help you save money – as the less stuff you have to move, the less money you will have to pay to move it.
Go through your bedroom, dividing the room into zones to help simplify the process. Then, separate all of your possessions into three main piles:
- Items to keep (or, to take with you during the move)
- Items to donate (if in excellent condition, you can try selling)
- Items to toss
Going through a wardrobe and getting rid of clothes can be particularly difficult for some people. After all, almost everything seems to come back in style eventually. While some items might be easy to toss, think critically about the others. Does the item still fit? When was the last time you wore it? Is it in good condition? Do you own multiples of the same item? Etc
Necessary Packing Supplies
Once you’ve successfully decluttered and sorted your bedroom into zones, it’s time to gather all the necessary packing supplies. You should have a much better idea of exactly the types of supplies you’re going to need. To safely and effectively pack up your bedroom, collect the following moving supplies:
- A variety of moving boxes in different sizes
- Wardrobe boxes
- Stretch wrap
- Bubble wrap
- Packing tape
- Packing paper (for wrapping fragile items)
- Garbage bags
- Mattress boxes
- Mattress covers
- Furniture pads and blankets
- Tools (for disassembling furniture)
- Cleaning supplies
With the space decluttered and all of the necessary supplies on hand, it’s time to start packing!
How to Pack Small Items
Before you start packing up all your things, separate out all of your possessions that you may need while the move is happening – the essentials. This might include a couple pairs of clothes and toiletries, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and the like. Also, set aside all of the electronics and chargers that you’re going to need during the move. Place all of these items into a small suitcase or backpack, that way it’s easy to lug around on moving day.
Next, you can move on to packing fragile and other small items.
- Packing fragile items. It’s always best to get the fragile stuff out of the way before you tackle the rest of the bedroom. Collect all of the fragile items, generously wrap them in bubble wrap, and tape to secure. Then, place the items in a small box, stuff it with tissue paper, and mark it “FRAGILE” in large, legible writing.
- Packing small items. After the fragile items are taken care of, you can start filling up small boxes with non-fragile things like books, papers, and various knick-knacks.
Make sure that you label each box accordingly, using a dark marker to note the contents on at least two sides.
How to Pack Clothing
When it comes to packing up the clothing in your bedroom, follow these steps:
- Wash your dirty clothes. Trust us when we say that you’re going to have so much to worry about during your move, the last thing you want is to be scrounging for clean clothes.
- Organize your clothing. Packing clothing tends to be one of the most time-consuming parts about packing up a bedroom. While it may be tempting to just toss everything into one box, take the time to organize the clothing based on season. Place all of the winter and fall clothes together, and all the summer and spring clothes in their own pile. Then, make separate out socks, underwear, and shoes.
- Use wardrobe boxes. For high-quality clothing like fancy dresses or tuxedos, use a wardrobe box. These items should be kept on hangers and a wardrobe box allows for this. If you’re concerned about space, you can use wardrobe box instead. The only difference is that wardrobe bags don’t stand upright light wardrobe boxes do.
- Fold and place in boxes. Folding your clothes before placing them into boxes helps reduce wrinkling and also conserves space. Once you’ve finished folding, place each type of clothing in its own individual box and label it accordingly.
After you’ve finished packing up the clothing in your bedroom, you can move onto the furniture, starting with the sheets, blankets, and linens.
How to Pack Bedroom Furniture
Packing up bedroom furniture begins with tackling the sheets and blankets on your bed. Remove them from your bed, fold them up, and place them into a large box with all your pillows. As a general note, lightweight items should be placed in larger boxes and heavy items should be packed in smaller boxes. This will make the loading and unloading process much easier on you and your movers.
Once your bedroom linens are handled, follow these steps for packing up your bedroom furniture:
- Place your mattress in a mattress bag. This is optional, but it ensures that your mattress stays clean during the moving process.
- Remove the mattress from the room. Take it out and lean it up against a wall to allow for more space to work in the bedroom.
- Disassemble the furniture. Use this time to take apart any furniture that requires disassembling prior to being moved such as bookcases, lamps, and bed frames.
- Set aside all of the small parts. Place all of the bolts, nuts, screws, or other small pieces into a plastic bag. Then, label the outside with the name of the furniture item it corresponds to.
- Remove the furniture from the room. Taking all of the furniture out of your bedroom will allow you to give it one last thorough clean. If you’re hiring a professional moving company, have your movers assist you with this step.
- Wrap the furniture for safety. If you’re concerned about your furniture getting damaged or scratched during the move, wrap it in plastic wrap or secure bubble wrap on the edges. Again, if you hired professional movers, they’ll usually take care of this step for you!
At this point, you likely still have some additional odds and ends lingering in the bedroom. If this is the case, simply place them in a box. Make sure that you wrap any fragile items up in bubble wrap, as needed. Congratulations! Your bedroom should now be completely packed!
