How to Pack a TV for Moving

How to Pack a TV for Moving

If you were to ask someone what is the most difficult thing to move in their home, they will probably answer something like their couch or library. But, it's not always the heavy, bulky items that require the most amount of work. Sometimes, a seemingly small and low-weight object can create the most problems.

We're talking here about your TV.

Your flat-screen TV may not be the heaviest thing in your home, but it's definitely one of the most expensive and fragile ones. One wrong step and you could be looking at hundreds of dollars worth of damage.

So, what's the best way to pack and transport and TV? Here are some tips.

Unplug and Organize the Cords

Start by taking pictures of the setup so that it would be easier to reassemble everything once you're settled into your new home. Then dust the back of the TV and start unplugging the codes. You can use masking tape and a marker to label the cords. Once you're done, organize them and store them in ziplock bags.

Protect the Screen

Ideally, you would use the original protective sleeve to cover the TV's screen, but if that's not an option, then you can wrap it in two or three layers of bubble wrap or a blanket. Make sure to secure the bubble wrap or blanket with a small rope or packing tape.

Find an Appropriate Box to Pack It

The original packaging that your TV came with would be the ideal solution for packing and transporting it. This box was created with shipping in mind and features Styrofoam sections that provide an airtight barrier between the box and the TV's screen.

If you don't have the original packaging anymore, look for a box that provides about three inches of additional space on all sides once the TV is inside. Pack the TV with the blanket or bubble wrap on as these layers of protection will also create padding between the box and the screen.

Place It Safely in the Truck

One of the things that make moving a TV so difficult is that modern flat-screen TVs must be kept upright. If you lay them flat, they might get damaged because they are weight balanced and won't get the right support in that position. Moreover, the truck's vibrations can make the screen vulnerable to cracking.

Unpack the TV

Make sure that the TV sits in an upright position at all times - when you are loading it into the truck, during shipping, and when you are moving it into your new home. Unpack the TV with care and as soon as possible.

Let the Pros Do It

Moving a TV requires care, fines, and a bit of experience. Sure, you could do it too if you take all the measures to ensure your TV will get to your destination in one piece. But, if you would rather focus on something else, then you should let the pros at Three Movers do it for you.
