Eco-friendly & Green Moving Tips | Three Movers
For most people, being environmentally conscious isn’t always at the top of their list of concerns when moving. Luckily, there are some moving companies that do take our responsibility to the environment seriously and offer eco-friendly moving services. If you have an upcoming move and are considering a moving company that has implemented green moving practices into their business, you may have to do some digging to find one that actually takes this responsibility seriously. And while not every moving company offers this type of service, there are several steps you can take during your move to help reduce your carbon footprint.
Donate, Donate, Donate
One of the easiest ways to reduce the waste during your move (and have less to move) is to donate items that you don’t need or use anymore. Rather than setting boxes and old furniture out next to the trash, it’s relatively easy to find someone willing to take lightly used items. Many donation centers like Goodwill even offer pickup services that you’re not creating more work for yourself. You can also put up a posting on Craigslist under the “free” section and easily get rid of any excess items.
Plan Ahead
Planning ahead is an important aspect of any move, but it’s even more important if you’re concerned about making several trips back and forth. With some careful planning, you can minimize the amount of trips you’ll need to take, either between homes, or from your home to your storage unit and back. Try to plan out a moving plan that doesn’t require any excess driving to reduce carbon emissions and save gas.
Three Movers takes every step possible to ensure our moving practices are as environmentally conscious, regardless of the size or distance of the move. Use What You Have To Pack
Your first instinct when planning a move is probably to pick up all the supplies you’re going to need. This includes things like boxes and tape to secure all of your belongings before loading them onto the moving truck. However, you’ll find that you can use much of what you already have in your home for moving purposes. For example, duffel bags, grocery bags, and luggage can be used to pack clothes and other items, as opposed to using another box. Similarly, rags and clothing can be used as packing supplies to help cushion items that can break during a move.
Give Away Supplies After the Move
Once your move is completed, you can recycle your moving supplies by giving them away to other people that are moving. Things like boxes can easily be given away after a move since there are always others looking for moving supplies. The same goes for things like tape, packing materials, or anything else that you accumulate during the moving process.
