Moving for the first time can be a bit intimidating. Most of this comes from a lack of experience with the service. The best way to overcome this feeling is by learning more about the industry and what you should expect from your moving company.

During your search for the right cheap moving company for your commercial needs, you’ll come across certain terms that are used widely in the industry. These include:

1. Accessorial/Additional services

This speaks to any service related to a move that is not a part of the standard package. Moving costs automatically include the truck rental, movers fees, and driving to the destination.

Accessorial or additional services include things like packing/unpacking, office decommissions, junk removal, and furniture assembly/disassembly. These will attract an extra cost.

2. Advanced Charges

Advanced charges are those that require special services or expertise. These are the services performed by a third party, such as an electrician or craftsman to handle aspects of the move outside of the normal duties and abilities of the movers.

3. Bill of Lading

A Bill of Lading is a contract that is drafted by the truck driver and shipper prior to the move. This describes the contents of the move, as well as their condition. The purpose of this document is to serve as proof in the event that a claim is made for damage.

This document is unique because it protects the interest of both the customer and the moving company.

4. Binding estimate

A binding estimate is actually a contract between the customer and the moving company. This contract is valid for 30 days and dictates that the mover must charge for the actual cost of the move, or the binding estimate, i.e the lesser charge.

The only exception to this occurs when there is an unforeseen cost. This is typically incurred after an on-site inspection where the move specialist determines the scope of the work is not as described by the customer at the initial estimate. This includes things like moving up/down stairs, or a customer requesting an additional service like packing.

5. C.O.D

C.O.D stands for Cash on Delivery. It simply means that payment is due to the mover once the contents of the moving truck are delivered. This does not always mean physical cash, and can be whichever payment method the moving company accepts.

6. Expedited Service

This describes a situation where a move is given priority because of tight deadlines. A customer can request to have their items moved ASAP and beat standard shipping times.

7. Flight service

This does not have anything to do with air freight. It refers to an extra charge moving companies may charge if they have to carry the items up and down flights of stairs. This service requires more effort and will take more time and precautions.

8. Long Carry

Long carry is an additional charge moving companies add to a moving bill when the movers have to physically carry the items for long or excessive distances between the moving truck and the commercial building.

9. Non-binding estimate

A non-binding estimate is not a contract or a bid. It is merely a written statement of an estimated moving cost. This does not mean it is the actual cost of the move, which can be higher.

10. Shuttle service

This is an additional charge added to moving bills when the truck driver has to use a smaller vehicle to bring items to the destination. This typically happens in remote areas where the terrain is not suited for the normal mover’s truck.

11. Storage-in-Transit

Storage-in-transit refers to temporary storage solutions as a result of the commercial space not being ready for occupation. This service is typically requested months in advance.

It can also apply to situations where the customer has failed to receive the items by the specified time, and the moving company is forced to find temporary storage until the issue is resolved.

12. Tariff

A tariff is a sort of tax that is imposed on moving companies. This is typically related to international moves, however, similar taxes and tolls will apply when moving interstate. These taxes and tolls are usually included in the standard moving cost.
