Tips For Labelling Boxes When Moving
Published by Chris Townsend
Planning and organization are a very important part of any successful move, and that doesn’t mean just having a gameplan and sticking to it. It also applies to how to label and organize the boxes so that both you and the movers have an idea of where things go inside your new home, as well as any special instructions related to how they should be handled. A box full of linens can be treated much differently than a box full of dishes and making that clear and obvious goes a long way toward making sure everything arrives intact and damage-free.
General Labelling Tips
There’s more to labelling moving boxes then just writing where they go, or that some things need to be handled carefully. You should label all sides of the boxes, whether you’re indicating what room they belong in, or how they should be handled. The more clearly labelled they are, the easier it is for movers to know how to handle them and where they go.
It’s helpful if you label boxes by which rooms they go in, as well as numbering them if there’s more than one box that goes in a particular room. If you want to be really proactive, which is always advisable when moving, you can make an inventory list of how many boxes go in each room of the house, and you can check them off as each numbered box is accounted for. Keep in mind that there are some boxes you’ll want to unpack first so you may want to label them as such. For example, items needed for preparing and cooking meals will be a priority after moving, so using some sort of system to indicate that will help during the unpacking process.

Markers & Labels
If you’ll be using markers to label boxes, be sure to use quality, permanent markers, preferably in a bright color that’s easy to read on the boxes. If you prefer to use labels instead of markers, that works too. Just make sure that they have a solid adhesive that won’t peel off even if they get wet. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure that the labels are big enough to be easily read by yourself and the movers, and as mentioned above, you should label all sides of the boxes.
Fragile Items & Special Instructions
Anything fragile or that needs to be oriented a certain way while moved needs to be labeled appropriately. While things like linens packed in a box may not need to be handled with extra care, dishes and other breakable items do. Along with what room these items go in, a clear indication of “Fragile” will let movers know to be more careful with items that are susceptible to damage when moving. Similarly, anything that needs to be oriented a certain way—not turned sideways or upside-down—should also be marked. Something as simple as “This end up” is usually enough to let movers know not to move the boxes in certain ways that may cause damage.
