Moving International to or From Ukraine

Moving Overseas to or From Ukraine
Moving Internationally to or from Ukraine
As a young country in Eastern Europe just figuring itself out after the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine is a country with tons of potential. The country’s population is younger than average, and it is a great place to start a new business or invest.
The cost to move to Ukraine can be divided into two categories: shipping and customs declaration. Shipping costs can be difficult to estimate accurately since there are so many fees for storage, handling, and processing. A shipping container cost estimate can help you get started, but it only tells part of the story.
Moving a full shipping container from the U.S. to Ukraine will cost between $6,700-$11,200. That’s a pretty wide range. Working with an international moving company will give you a more accurate quote that you can use for budgeting.
Once your goods arrive in Ukraine, they may be subject to customs duty and taxes unless you can qualify for an exemption. To qualify, you must have lived outside of Ukraine for at least a year, and your goods must be items you have both owned and used in your country of origin for at least six months.

You do not have to be present for the clearance process unless you are importing a vehicle. However, you should be in the country so that you can address any questions or concerns.
When you arrive in Ukraine, you will need the following documents for you and your imports:
- Work permit
- Ukrainian visa
- Power of Attorney for customs clearance agents
- Work contract signed by accredited employer
- Pro-forma invoice
- Detailed inventory of all goods with serial numbers and estimates of value
- Valid passport
- Bill of lading
- Ukrainian tax code registration
Am I allowed to bring my vehicle to Ukraine?
You may bring one vehicle with you when you move to Ukraine, and it must be less than 5 years old. Unlike with your household goods, if you import a vehicle to Ukraine you must be present for the customs clearance process.
Ukrainian customs officials will need the following information and documents from you:
- Vehicle registration from your home country (It is recommended that you keep this registration active for at least a year.)
- Proof of purchase
- International auto insurance policy
- Work permit (If you don’t have a work permit you will have to pay customs duty and taxes.
- Valid passport
- Driver’s license from your home country (and an International Driver’s License if you are from North America)
- Description of your vehicle with make, model, engine size, and any serial numbers.
For vehicles imported from North America, you will have additional requirements. Vehicles in Ukraine are driven on the left side of the road. Your vehicle will need extensive modifications to acceleration, braking, and steering in order to be safely driven in this country. These alterations are not upgrades. If you don’t want to have your vehicle get an ugly makeover, you may want to leave it home for now.
