Importing household goods to Germany
Every shipment into or out of the European Union must be accompanied by an EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification). You will be asked for this number again and again through the customs process, so be sure to keep this information close at hand. In addition, you will need to provide paperwork about your shipment and your personal status in Germany, including:
- German visa
- Valid passport with at least six months left before expiration
- Customs declaration forms
- Proof of Employment and Residence
- Detailed packing list with valued inventory
- German Residence Registration
In order to qualify for free entry imports of your goods, you must have lived outside of Germany for at least a year, have owned your personal goods for at least six months, and keep the items you import in your possession for at least one year after you arrive in Germany.
Can I import my vehicle to Germany?
You are invited to import your personal vehicle to Germany as long as you can meet their strict regulatory requirements. For North American vehicles, these requirements can be much more onerous. Your vehicles will need to be mechanically modified so that they can be driven on the left side of the road safely. You will also need changes to your headlights, emissions, and other safety systems. These mechanical alterations must be completed a qualified mechanic and the results will be much more functional than attractive.
Once your vehicle has successfully been shipped, processed, and modified, you must register your vehicle in Germany. Vehicle registration in Germany requires:
- Valid Passport or Other ID
- Proof of Ownership (clean title and proof of purchase)
- Proof of German Residency
- Vehicle Registration
- Vehicle Insurance Coverage
