What do I need to know about moving my household goods to Bulgaria?

As with every international move, you will need to carry a lot of paperwork with you when you move to Bulgaria. You will need paperwork for you, and also documentation for your imports.

For you, you will need:

  • Passport (copy)
  • Proof of employment from Bulgarian employer
  • Bulgarian work permit
  • Bulgarian ID card (for long-term residence).

Note: If you cannot show your Bulgarian ID card when you arrive, you will be required to leave a deposit with customs officials. If you can provide your Bulgarian ID within six months, your deposit will be returned to you.

For your imports, you will need:

  • Customs declaration form
  • Comprehensive inventory
  • Proof of address in Bulgaria which also shows intent to stay for at least a year

Your personal items can be imported tax and duty-free as long as you import these items within three months of your arrival in Bulgaria.

Can I bring my vehicle to Bulgaria?

When moving to Bulgaria, you are allowed to import one vehicle duty-free. All you need to do is present customs officials with proof that you own it, that it is insured, that it is safe, and that you are allowed to drive it. Make sure you have these documents handy:

  • Clean title
  • Proof of purchase
  • Registration from your home country
  • Proof of vehicle insurance
  • Driver’s license (If you are from North America, you will need an International Driver’s License

If you are considering importing your vehicle from North America, you should also know that your vehicle will need extensive modifications to be legally driven in Bulgaria. North American vehicles are built to be driven on the right-hand side of the road, and vehicles in Bulgaria are driven on the left-hand side.
