Moving A Hot Tub Tips & Advice
Published on 2023-03-12
If you’ve ever had to move a hot tub, it’s a real bear of a job. It requires specialized equipment, the help of a few other people, and some muscle, all while being careful to keep it balanced so it stays intact during the move. If you haven’t ever moved a hot tub and you’ll be doing so soon, be sure to follow these steps so to prevent damage and injury during the process. If you have any doubts about your ability to safely move a hot tub, hire a moving company with appropriate experience to do the job for you.
Planning Is Important
Planning is an important first step for anything you move, but it’s really important when moving a hot tub. You need to consider things like renting the right sized truck, making arrangements to have it available when you need it, any other equipment you’ll need (think furniture dolly), and enlisting the help of few people to help you. Also keep in mind that you need to plan a path from where the tub is located to the moving truck, as well as from the truck to where it will be stationed at the new home. Make sure both areas are free of anything that could trip people or get in the way. Keep in mind that you’ll need to account for the height and width of the tub, as well as the furniture dolly and the people helping you to maneuver it, which brings us to our second point.

You’ll Need Help
You cannot and should not attempt to move a hot tub on your own. It’s a difficult job that requires the help of at least two other people, and ideally, three. You need to keep the tub centered on the furniture dolly, as well as balanced when you’re moving it. You can place boards underneath the hot tub to make it easier to lift onto the furniture dolly and, in either case, make sure you tighten the straps once it is evenly placed on the dolly. If the hot tub needs to be loaded on its side, be sure that the control panel is facing up so that the weight of the tub doesn’t damage the control unit while it’s being moved.
Drain & Disconnect
You’ll need to drain and disconnect everything before attempting to move a hot tub. When draining, be sure to direct the water to an area that won’t impeded your path when moving it. You don’t want anyone slipping while trying to steer the dolly, and you certainly don’t want to try and get a loaded furniture dolly through a wet, muddy mess when it’s already a difficult undertaking.
Go Slow When Loading & Unloading
When loading and unloading the hot tub on the moving truck, go slow and steady. There’s no rush and any misstep can cause it to fall off the ramp, which could cause permanent damage and possibly injure you or those helping you. A moving ramp is a great and necessary help, but getting the tub up the ramp, even with a furniture dolly, requires some effort. Try to station people on each side of the tub to help with the effort and make sure it stays balanced when loading and unloading.
